I am a triathlete and collegiate runner. I recently got a stress fracture in my 5th metatarsal and was put in a walking boot for 6 weeks. During the 6 weeks, I continued to use a stationary bike and swam. After I got the boot off, I spent a few days just walking around, and then I was allowed to use the elliptical for 20 minutes by our trainer. 2 days later (I also swam and biked during those 2 days), I felt a lot of pain in my extensor tendons. I did not have pain where my stress fracture was, but I do have pain in my tendons, arch, ankle, and toes. The pain has persisted for the past 5 days and is not getting better. Over the past 5 days I have not biked or used the elliptical, but I have swam (but I have done less swimming over the past 5 days). My trainer thinks it is from my tendons being weakened from being in a walking boot, but now she wants me to see a doctor soon because the pain has continued for the past 5 days. I am seeing a doctor soon, but I would also like some advice or help with this problem. If anyone has some experience with this issue, please offer some advice or information about this issue. Also, if anyone knows a training schedule for progressively getting back into running from stress fractures, please let me know. Thank you so much.
