The NCAA oversees the championships of just about every collegiate sport and also oversees the rules of competition. The people who think that the NCAA is some bureaucracy that makes money and keeps it don't get it. The presidents of the colleges that belong to the NCAA make the major decisions. Each sport and division have committees that oversee their sport. NCAA committees have representatives from different schools serving on the committees. If not for the March Madness TV contract, the NCAA would not have the money to fund the championships. If the individual schools had to pay for everything involved with going to a nationals (flight / transportation, hotels, car rentals, meals), you would see a lot fewer people competing at nationals and getting the opportunity for the experience. There are certainly issues with college sports, but to say that the NCAA serves no purpose shows a significant lack of understanding of how things work.
