A number of sub elite guys and girls put their careers on hold to pursue dreams of competing at a high level and qualifying for the olympic trials, often times heading to Flagstaff/Boulder/Eugene to live among a community of like minded people. I totally respect the decision, but I can't begin to wrap my head around how some of these people support themselves financially, particularly when living in places like Boulder and Eugene where cost of living is quite high. Even in places where cost of living is low, it would still be difficult to support yourself without an income considering the cost of rent, food, car insurance (if you have a car), health insurance, race travel, race entry, running gear, etc.
For people who have taken this leap of faith to pursue your goals, hats off to you. How do you do it though? What kind of sacrifices have you had to make? Do you rack up enormous credit card debt? Do you get support from your parents?
