Seems likely OP just made up a story, but you never know.
It would be curious to see what the guy said. Did he mix up speeds? Did it feel way to fast? Did he say something about an "off day"?

His immediate response upon grabbing the handle bars was "you were right." Although in speaking with him since then it sounds like he still thinks he could do it, and that he's not in as good of shape as he used to be. He's also described it as a "mental battle" which is obviously true to a degree but not if you don't have the level of aerobic fitness to do it in the first place. He also spoke of stomach problems.
I don't think he's aware that his 3 minutes are actually pretty respectable. Besides the one other serious runner at my work, my guess is that nobody else would last that long.

Did you or he forget that this was his typical "warm-up"?
Even on a bad day you should be able to do your warm-up for more than 3 minutes.
