This is the trend, my local Turkey Trot is imploring us to "be generous" and forego timing and they'll donate a couple bucks to a local charity.
I'm no race director but I would think that once you pay to get the timing gear set up, it probably doesn't cost much per runner to actually get the times.
I see this a a testing the waters to see how many people will still sign up next year if they make it untimed.
Pretty soon asking for your time at a race will be as socially unacceptable as asking a drag queen not to follow your 7 year old into the ladies room.
First they came for the overall finishers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a over finisher.
Then they came for the age groups, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a in the top for my age group.
Then they came for the competition, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not in the top of the competition.
Then they came for the time—and there was no one left to speak for me.
