What is with this all or nothing negativity here? No other sport has such ridiculous people making fun of others accomplishments. It seems that the definition of a hobby here is if you aren't good enough to make money at it? I get that waddling a 5 hour marathon is hardly chest beating material but there is a middle ground between the extremes.
The vast majority of people playing basketball at highschool will not get a scholarship and even the majority of basketball players at the collegiate level will never make it to the NBA. They will not get any money. I bet most of these players don't use the term "hobby" for what they are doing though. They say they are engaging in a competitive sport.
How about calling running a competitive sport like most other sports with participants who will never see money?
Anyone who takes running seriously, takes their competitions seriously qualifies as a runner to me.
And even if you must insist on calling it a hobby, why not call it "hobby running"? There's a thread arguing whether a 945 2m in HS is hobby jogging. Seriously? I know some people are being sarcastic but some are seriousl. well, 9:45 2m is not jogging even for the elites.
Most people here don't even define what the term jogging is. I would consider jogging to be something like going at a pace less than 60% of VO2 max. but I'm open to other definitions.
