Looking at D1 in PA, CT, RI or NY. I'm a male junior that ran 16:18 in cross and a 4:31 1600 as a soph with a 9:58 3200.
I'm thinking:
Rhode Island
Providence
Duquesne
Pitt
Marist
UConn
Saint Francis
Any input on these schools? I'm looking primariy at the times of their 5th 5K guy. I know I won't get any money for running but we may get some based on financial need and grades. Thank you.
I went through this whole process when I was in high school. I'm from PA.
Let me preface this by saying that it can never hurt to email the coach to ask about their program and their recruiting standards. Message boards aren't exactly ideal.
I'm going to be incredibly blunt with you...
- Pitt and Providence are out of the question for you assuming you don't better your times. Despite some of their recent struggles, they still have (relatively) high standards. Think sub-16 5k (at least) and mid 4:20's mile (at least).
- UCONN is difficult to know. Depends on what their current roster is like and who else they recruit. They may chat with you, but kind of an unknown. Wouldn't hold my breath, but worth a shot.
- Duquesne and Rhode Island are slightly more realistic. They would probably talk with you. You could potentially walk on. Not at all guaranteed though.
- Saint Francis has secured a few decent PA recruits as of late. If you're looking for a smaller school with a handful of young talent, this is the one for you. Not sure about their recruiting standards, but you're probably within range.
- Despite my little knowledge about Marist, you should have a very realistic chance to enter that program. Maybe you'll be varsity your first year. Tough to say, don't know much about the program, but seems very reasonable.
