Is CIM still going to happen?
Is CIM still going to happen?
if it doesn't the chances of getting a refund for the entry fee will be zero.
If the Marathon that is 3 weeks away is cancelled then our problems will be much greater than some silly foot race.
Id imagine the smoke will still be pretty brutal even if no cities are in danger
It's 3 weeks away.
What makes you think anyone would know this far in advance? There is a decent chance of rain mid next week so that would take care of the fires and smoke in the air.

Big fires often burn for 3 weeks in the summertime. Big fires in November are nearly unheard of, mainly because it usually rains from time to time in November. Presumably we will get a decent rainstorm between now and CIM and that will largely take care of things. But there are no guarantees.
If the fires are still going, all the super fit runners need to trade in those running shoes for some wildland fire boots and go help out on the mountain.
What happens when no one gets the perfect conditions of last year? Everyone expecting perfect conditions. The smoke should be clear, but will there be rain with headwinds?

No. The firefighters around the country who do NOTHING 23.7 hours a day should help. Runners should find an alternate race.
For any of those who have purchased a bib for CIM already, I'd like to offer to purchase your bib from you. Please leave your email and I will be in contact with you.
Now that is way too sensible!
The Berkeley Half Marathon was canceled today due to poor air quality. It was scheduled for Sunday.
Hopefully the fires die or are contained and the air quality improves enough for the race to proceed. CIM is such a target race for so many people.
I lived in Northern California before and am now in Northern Thailand. I was thinking of moving back to California because of the air pollution in Thailand caused by the constant burning here. Locals burn agricultural waste like rice stubble, tree branches, and dry leaves, while household garbage also gets illegally burned because people are too cheap to spend $1 or $2 on trash disposal fees.
But now it looks like air pollution in Northern California is way, way worse than in Thailand.
So which one should I choose:
1. Predictable but almost constant smoke from daily afternoon burning in Southeast Asia. But because of constant controlled burning, scary wildfires almost never happen.
2. Unpredictable and scary wildfire smoke that usually lasts for only less than a month, and the rest of the year sees great air quality.
Great year round air quality and California are not synonymous......at least where I live.
The rain that is predicted to arrive in a few days should put out, or at least slow the fire enough so that it can be put out. The wind should dissipate the smoke.
CIM should be fine
I was thinking of the Bay Area, which almost never gets AQI's over 100 unless wildfire smoke blows over. Most of Northern California does have great air quality except for the Central Valley, so I'm presuming that's where you from.
Large groups of people are being organized to rake the floors to ensure no new fires occur before CIM.
I have been concerned about the race since I am going for the OTQ there.
But as someone with family in the area's near paradise there's other bigger concerns.
Back to the race my family in Sacramento think there is a 90% chance its not an issue. It is supposed to rain between now and the race and the fires are mostly controlled.

Most of Coastal Nor Cal has great air. Head over the hills and its a different story. Maybe take the south bay out of that "great air" category also.
The 39degF and raining forecast for race day is more concerning to me than the smoke.
