Flats help slower people more in terms of raw seconds off final time than they do fast people. Maybe in trainers I could run 16:00 on the road and 15:3x in flats. A 21 min runner might go from 21:00 to 20:2x.
Don't think so, the slower you run, the less impact a flat will have in terms of percent improvement and may make things worse due to less cushioning, My coach always said if you run slower than about 7:30/mile, don't waste your money on flats.
Same thing with cycling, if you're biking less than 10-12mph, a lighter wheel won't make much of a diff.
Maybe some physics or engineering person knows the math.
