Thanks for the Gallowbraid rec. I liked it enough to buy the download off of their Bandcamp.

Liking Gallowbraid- thanks for the rec!
One I forgot to mention earlier of similar style, Harakiri for the Sky.

^ original song that got me hooked onto them
Excellent—I like these guys. More $ To Bandcamp.
Right now I believe GOJIRA is the best active metal band, and their drummer, Mario Duplantier, the "best" drummer.

In the last 25 years my vote goes to ENSLAVED, who hit an unbelievable string of great releases from 2000 through 2012 (Mardraum through RIITIIR).
One thing both bands have in common is the willingness and skill to vary their sound and evolve. I really love AMON AMARTH since "Once Sent..." came out in 1998, but after the excellent "With Oden on our side", I found that I just can't get into any of the last 4 albums as they are simply too derivative.
Most of the "original" Black Metal has not stood the test of time, and this is coming from someone that has listened from about 1994 until now. There are maybe a couple of songs from Burzum, Emperor, and Immortal that are good, but other stalwarts like Darkthrone and Mayhem are pretty much unlistenable to me now.
Another really great metal band is CULT OF LUNA who do not get enough respect. Along with Enslaved and Gojira, they are my top three favorite metal bands right now.
With the exception of Immortal, who I do like and whose work is remarkably consistent over time, I agree about the original black metal bands. It doesn't help that their ideology was repugnant, in some cases.
Harakiri for the Sky is excellent, a little like Nachtmystium, Alcest, Agalloch. They are on iTunes.
Gojira is one of those bands I just can't get into for whatever reason... Duplantier is good... i prefer other drummers such as Steve Flynn (atheist), Proscriptor (Absu) but just my preference
I'd agree that that 1st wave of Norwegian black metal is fairly dated but I still listen to a lot of early 90s black metal which i think has stood the test of time
Dissection (I think their 1st two albums are the greatest of this genre)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q78Teqr2T6ESamael - Blood Ritual or Ceremony of Opposites
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urZB9ZSMCUUUlver - Bergtat (you could argue this was the precursor album to bands like Agalloch)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFLUecKDzjQOther favourite Black metal albums from late 90s and onwards I still regularly listen to
Absu - Tara
Borknagar - The Olden Domain
Cobalt - Gin
Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork
Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness triumphant
Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells
Falkenbach - Heralding
Gehenna - Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell)
Ildra - Eðelland
Immortal - At the Heart of the Winter
Kekal - 1000 Thoughts of Violance
Mgla - Exercises in Futility
Moonsorrow - Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa
Morgul - Parody of Mass
Myrkgrav - Trollskau, Skrømt Og Kølabrenning
Negura Bunget - Om
Nocte Obducta - Nektar Teil 2
Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
Sacramentum - Far Away from The Sun
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape
Taake - Nattestid Ser Porten Vid
Unanimated - Ancient God of Evil
Vinterland - Welcome to my last chapter
Vreid - Milorg
Windir - 1184
Glad to see the best thread on LR is still going strong! A few links that might interest a few of you, given your taste in music.
I listen to Cobalt frequently. Slow Forever has gotten a little old, but Gin and especially Eater of Birds really work. It's hard to believe all that is basically just the work of Erik Wunder.

yeah, same...Slow Forever isn't a bad album but just isn't on the level with those others imo
Still, one of the better US Black Metal bands in terms of consistency
I agree with many of your bands on there, but different releases.
Absu - The Sun of Tiphareth
Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions (although I do like EDT)
Immortal - ATHOW is definitely number 1, but each of the Abbath led releases are good and I also still enjoy Pure Holocaust and Battles in the North.
Samael - Passage and Eternal
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal (no joking, it's a deceptively beautiful album) and Perdition City (totally not metal)
Groups like Falkenbach, Negura Bunget, Drudkh, I think you are right, but was never a big fan of any of them.
A death metal release that I really enjoy is APOPHIS - Heliopolis. If you can find it, you'll enjoy a melodo-death classic that is virtually unknown.
Bands that I listen to on a regular basis and have for 30 years would be King Diamond and Iron Maiden.
Metallica SHOULD be on this list because they are the band that influenced me the most when I needed it (1987 to 1992), but I just have not cared about any release since And Justice for All (including Black Album). The first 4 releases bring back nostalgia like nothing else, but the subsequent 8 or so releases have done nothing or me.
Heh, Nattens Madrigal is a tough listen to me...The production is just too raw for my liking. If i want to listen to Garm do growls, I'll listen to the first couple Borknagar albums or Arcturus.
Megadeth was my staple growing up and still listen to their older albums and the odd modern song i like. Totally same thought about Metallica as you. Started with the Thrash and Power metal stuff and slowly moved to extreme sub genres...still like thrash though, just can be abit repetitive after a while. Other long term bands (+20 years of listening to) i still listen to would be
Megadeth
Atheist
Blind Guardian (anything up to Nightfall in middle earth)
Dissection
Edge of Sanity
Iron Maiden
Hypocrisy
Slayer
Opeth
Stratovarius
Sadus
I'll check out Apophis...always open to checking out new bands
Creed.
Great band that's on the rise: Spiritbox

More favorite groups:
TesseracT
Fellsilent (when I need more TesseracT)
Lamb of God
Drewsif Stalin's Musical Endeavor's
Periphery
Meshuggah
Gojira
Twelve Foot Ninja
The Contortionist
Native Construct
I bought Blizzards of Oz the other day, haven't heard it since it came out. Don't know what to make of it really, its very radio friendly. Definitely of its time when metal was in the singles charts a lot.
I've been on a huge The Sword kick lately, but very recently have rediscovered my appreciation for Ozzy era Black Sabbath

I think that Northern Chaos Gods returns Immortal to their early sound. Thoughts?
I'm not a huge thrash fan, but I can always listen to Slayer.
I am a huge Maiden fan and like listening to their imitators as well, especially Helloween, Liege Lord, Attacker.
This thread has led me to a bunch of new (to me) music. Keep them coming. I have Harakiri for the Sky on repeat.
I love Beyond Creation for running, also if you like death metal check out the new Aborted album. SO GOOD
I like TOOL, but this song is like a better version of TOOL.
Meh, a bunch of scrawny distance runners trying to look tough by listening to demonic "music."

sounds like a raw unpolished tool from the Opiate days, except the drums arent as good, and the vocals are horrid.
