Anyone else focusing on the mile for your spring races?
I've been training seriously as an adult for just over 4 years, working up from the 5K to 10K and HM and finally my first marathon with decent results. My longer-term plan is trying to break 1:20 in a HM in fall 2019 and then running Boston in 2020 (I just ran a comfortable BQ).
But I'm in my late 40s and running out of time to break 5:00 in the mile. I ran in the low 4:40s in high school, but my recent mile times over the last few years have been 5:10-20, and not exactly moving in the right direction. So to mix things up, I'm doing mile training this winter.
I plan to follow Daniels 2nd ed. 3Q with 40-50 mpw, but with a slow, gradual start on the mile-specific R paces during an extended phase II. From experience I know that even a little work at R pace takes me longer to recover from than even my longest MP workouts, so a lot of "workouts" at first may involve touching on paces rather than completing all the reps. Also, I'll be dealing with winter weather that ranges from bad to life threatening, so I'll have to adapt the workouts to a crowded indoor track for a while. Right now, I'm doing phase I-ish stuff: easy miles, one longer run a week, and strides whenever I can.
On my racing calendar, I've got mile races planned for December, March, April, and the goal race in June. I'll also have 5K races in February and March and a 10K in May. I'll use this thread for any important updates. Anyone else who's trying out middle distance for the first time ever/first time in a long time/maybe the last time, or just has something useful to add, feel free to join in. Sub-elite trigger warning: this is a hobby jogger thread.
