I saw this tweet by Deena Kastor on twitter

and figured it really couldn't be true. Capiraso, the CEO of the New York Road Runners, runs NYC every year. He's in his 50s. No way could a guy like that actually PR right? But it's coming from the fastest US marathoner ever who knows what a PR is.
I went and looked up what he ran in NY this year and it was 3:48:56.
Did some googling and found the article below from Amby Burfoot that says Capiraso's PR is 3:49:41 from LAST year.
So Prs at age 55 and 56 in his 26th and 27th NYC marathons. Unbelievable on so many levels. To PR at 56 years old is nuts. So a big congrats. It would be one thing if he just started running but he didn't.

But then it got me thinking, what was he doing for training in the past? He's been running these for 26 years. Even if his training was complete crap at age 35, I'd expect him to beat what he did now. Maybe he cared not at all about his time for 20 years and shifted his focus recently? I'd still think a younger version would beat him.
And if you figure he's too busy with his job with the marathon and getting the marathon ready to have time to care about training think again. He's only worked for the NYRR for the last 7 years. He had run 20 straight NYCs before joining the NYRR and is one of the few employees allowed to run the race.
I went and found all his NYC Marathon finishing times (the NYRR website lets you pull up all a person's race results).
From looking at it looks like he went sub 4, four times in his 30s.
Then when he turned 40, he did what a lot of people probably do and really trained and set a PR.
Then things were pretty dark in his 40s. Didn't break 4:30 for 7 straight years. Then once he started working at NYRR he started getting a lot faster.
My take is in his 40s his job was demanding, he had kids taking up a lot of time, and he couldn't justify putting in much training. He then started working at NYRR, where it's ok to go for a run from time to time, but I'm still surprised he can set an absolute PR.
Here are his NYC Marathon times:
1991 4:18:33
1992 4:00:08 30 years old
1993 3:55:35
1994 3:53:36 PR
1995 4:47:30
1996 4:07:31
1997 4:00:37
1998 3:57:24
1999 4:03:45
2000 4:02:55
2001 3:56:44
2002 3:49:51 PR (40 years old)
2003 4:13:53
2004 4:34:22
2005 4:44:17
2006 4:51:02
2007 4:52:09
2008 4:54:08
2009 4:46:30
2010 4:43:45
2011 4:12:34
(turns 50)
2013 4:05:00
2014 3:54:05

Anyone know of anyone else who ran for such a long time at set PRs in their mid 50s?
