That would be 3 hours for me next March. Hmmmmm
I ran 2:35 when I was 40, and I suck. It can be done.
holy crap this was the most inspiring thing I've ever read
“There are advantages to finding hobbies that don’t depend on exhaustion and obsession.”
Now I just need a how-to article on that.
I'm trying to run 2:59 at 59 in 2019. I ran 3:04 at 56 and 3:07 at 58, so not really close yet.
The difference being I am retiring from full time work. Hoping that will make all the difference. More sleep, more time and energy.
I pretty much do all the tricks in the article already -- tempo, intervals, etc. Except the beet juice. I am a sceptic on nutrition gimmicks.
Good luck, Raysharp001! I'm 29 and running my first marathon (NYC) tomorrow -- and I am also aiming for a 2:59. I'd be grateful beyond belief to be as fit as you in 30 years.
Pretty easy 43 and numerous 2:20-2:30 times.
Nice article with a lot of good info. But...
What is it with people saying, I want to run a fast marathon, but not run more?
Or, Yeah, I run a 2:43 marathon. What are these "intervals" and "tempo runs" you speak of?
Or, More miles will injure me. So I added v02max pace intervals instead!
Or, All it takes to PR at 43 is consulting with 3 national experts and a pair of Nike's cheater shoes.
Mostly I wish I had the kind of talent that let me run a 2:43 marathon off of haphazard, low mileage training.

I'm also a sceptic on nutrition/recovery gimmicks, (ahem, cryotherapy) but I will say beet juice has some pretty solid studies and science backing it up. I'd recommend wearing a heart rate monitor and trying the same workouts with and without BeetElite or similar product.
Nice humblebrag. Yes you do suck.
Hello, I'm the author. Thanks for the kind feedback, and for posting this here. And 22twos, that's a really good idea. I may try that test! I was only really using the beet juice the last couple weeks, but it's a totally good idea. And one could probably do the same thing with the shoes: particularly with all the extra data I started tracking on power and heart rate.
Great article. Enjoy your youth!
Damn, I need to shave off 10 minutes in Boston next year... LOL
You get a moose mug - well some did
The 2:00 plus Age Marathon goal was big on the old RW Forums. I think they called people who achieved it "Moose Mug Runners" goal because some RW Forum member would send a moose mug to anyone that met the goal.

I sort of agree, but it depends on your age. In my 40’s 4:age for the mile was no big deal. By 50 it was getting pretty tough even with mile-specific training. At 54, missed by a couple tenths and broke a good long string.

Oh yeah..... cakewalk...

Coincidentally, I ran 3:07 at 58, and am aiming for 3:00 at 60 in 2019. Two hours plus age, although this is the first I've thought of it that way. It's a long shot, of course. Haven't broken 3 hours since my 40s. And no retirement in sight for me ... until death, anyway. Good luck!
I wonder who the youngest 2 hours + age is. Surely there have been sub 2:20 20 year olds. Possibly a 2:16 16 year old.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06

Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
