Thirty years ago 800 champ Johnny Gray told me he did weekly 20 mile runs.

Ryuns coach at Kansas burned through 30 decent runners with his abusive training and lucked out to get one GOAT, so I guess it was "worth it."
If what you say is true, then I'd say it was the 40 x 400s that did the burning, not the 20 mile runs. Gray did twenty mile runs? I hadn't heard of that.

Timmons was Ryun's coach long before he was at the university of Kansas "burning through 30 decent runners". He also coached Archie San Romani Jr, previous HS mile record holder in the late 50's before Ryun (4:08?), so success wasn't some kind of fluke. You sound bitter. Let it go.
kip here after 8 minutes talks about 60 , 100 mile weeks. interesting
Actually, that is very interesting - regarding miles per week, according to Kip,
Miles per week; "subject, you not even tell"
Nothing has changed :)
I heard from an old guy who trained (or tried to) with Ryun in HS that is 20 mile runs were "telephone pole" runs. Basically he would change his speed with each telephone pole, going 25-50-75-100-75-50-25 (%) and then jog for like 5 minutes and do it over again. Whenever I see that old guy he asks me if I'm doing my telephone poles haha.
9:00: Kip being cagey, even a bit sleazy...Liquori hated this, and Ryun seemed confused about it.

I know Gray; he was a prolific trainer and I would not be surprised if he 'once' ran 20 miles, but it was definitely not a staple of his training. I do recall him being a pretty decent XC and 2-miler when he started out in high school, but by the time he entered college, he was more of a 400/800 type and trained like one. Gray was known for large volumes of intervals with an amazing a tag. I have heard stories of Gray doing 20 400s, which a 1:50 800 at the end. I don't know if that's true, but everyone who trained with his said he trained like an animal.
jim ryun had a pretty short career....
this is interesting. What a slow 800m indoor record: "In 1967, Ryun set a world record in the indoor half mile (1:48.3) and the outdoor mile from (3:51.1), a record that stood for almost eight years."
I wonder how many wrote:

Running long doesn't make you slow. Not doing speed work does.

That 1:48 is probably worth 1:45/6 on today's banked, tuned and fast indoor tracks.
I believe Ryun did plenty of mileage, but he wasn't particularly good at either XC or the 5k, although I don't think he gave the latter many tries.
He did not.
The only reason you keep pushing the long slow miles bullcrap is because you have no pure leg speed and lsd is all you can do anyways.
