Washed up running 40K with the leaders at 2:04:00 pace???
WHy do we waste our time? Because he's the GOAT. That's why. And it's not like he hasn't done anything recently.
In 2016, he was 3rd in London (2:06:36) then 1st in Berlin in 2:03:03. That's what we call an amazing year. We ranked him #2 in the world. Galen Rupp fans should be happy as hell that he wasn't selected for the 2016 Ethiopian Olympic team. It's a disgrace that we didn't get to see Bekele vs Kipchoge in Rio. Both guys were in phenomenal shape that fall.
2017- he was 2nd in London - the most competitive marathon in the world.
2018 - not good but he was 6th in London after going out in 61 flat. 6th in London isn't bad. You do realize that the guy who was 7th was Lawrence Cherono who just won Amsterdam in 2:04.
I think the problem we have with him and the problem he himself has is the expectations are too high. He's not interested in going to a lower tier major and picking up the win. All that matters is running fast in a big one. The only thing that motivates him is trying to beat the best.
He is kind of full of crap with this, because he stated that Bekele picked up a hip issue that prevented him from accelerating, and just got worse in the later stages of the race.
So which one is it?
Did he fail because the preparation wasn't there? Or was it because he was injured?
An agent's job is to work for his athlete regardless of the nature, and keep out of the spotlight. He does the opposite of that. I would have fired him a long time ago.
One of us! One of us! One of us!
As long as the GOAT lives and breathes the true fans of this sport will Expect Great Things™️✔️
It’s no surprise you fair weather bois love to ride EK’s jock... he makes it easy. But literally millions of us True Fans™️✔️ wake up at random times across the globe every few months to tune into Kenenisa’s latest endeavor. Sometimes we’re disappointed, as is the case lately. But only a fool would write off the GOAT. Someday soon, probably this week after Hermens flapped his waffle hole a lil too much, the man is going to decide enough is enough and decide to start hammering scrubs like the golden days.
Expect Great Things™️✔️
Maybe he ihas ADD. Didn’t he train with the National team throughout his Olympic and world record yrs? Everything was handed to him, he showed up and did the assigned WOs, raced at the assigned races and ate the food cooked for him.
I remember reading last yr he eats like crap. He doesn’t look as fit and lean as EK. The Ethiopians never look as cut but he looks soft. Part of being the GOAT is the mental capacity combined with the physical gifts. He doesn’t appear to have the drive or situation any longer.

Could be both...started preparation late...then got injured and pushed through since he knew he wasn't prepared

Yesterday, many of you were talking about the Jos Hermens interview which was in Dutch about Bekele. The google translate version of it wasn't great so we've translated the whole thing for you. It's a great read.
Hermens said Bekele has as much talent as Kipchoge but his chaotic life prevents him from fulfilling his potential at 26.2.
“It all comes down to preparation. He has just as much talent as Kipchoge, but while Kipchoge will prepare for six months before a marathon, Bekele only started 7 weeks ago. That just can’t work…It’s extremely frustrating…. I think he has some kind of dyslexia, an inability to plan…It’s really hard with him.”

He has a coach and a manager. Why the hell isn't anyone keeping him on track?

No. He stepped on a stone and tweaked his hip, and that interrupted his training, and bothered him towards the end of the race. . For most of the race he was on 2:04 pace, and looked good. So my point is how is Jos saying that Bekele didn't take training seriously, and that is why he didn't finish, but clearly stated that the injury he picked up during training flared up towards the end of the race, which is why he couldn't finish?
“When he was starting to push, the right hip started to lock up more than it did before,” Hermens said. “You try to hold back and hopefully it release again, but at 30k, with those guys pushing at his pace, it was impossible.”
“Tell me why he would?” Hermens responded. “I know he was going to finish in 10th place probably, 2:10. And then push another 2k? It’s no use. No, no. He was already slowing down from 35 to 40. It had no use. It was only getting worse and worse and worse.”
The man is full of it . It's a huge contradiction on his part.
http://www.letsrun.com/news/2018/10/examinaton-kenenisa-bekeles-bizarre-day-2018-tcs-amsterdam-marathon/Seems like Bekele doesn't care anymore. 2016 was his shot at the marathon WR and he missed it. Now he's just collecting appearance fees.

You’re not wrong. KB needs to hire Haile to manage his enterprises in order to spend a year in isolation preparing a magnum opus in the manner of Stephen Cherono and Kipchoge’s group. Kipchoge 2.0 has nerfed KB’s immeasurable talent advantage.

Bekele either doesn't care anymore or doesn't understand exercise science of the sport he holds a world record in. Does he have only his coaches to thank for his success ever?
Red blood cells are the life of distance runners and only as good as your last 90 days. If his build up was only 7 weeks, then he was woefully underprepared for a marathon. A guy like Kipchoge puts in months of good training so that his 90 days before the marathon is all amazing preparation from day 1 through 90. This needs to be clearly explained to Bekele so we can at least be sure ignorance of his own sport isn't what's holding him back.
I think you may have nailed it. Letsrunners often fail to understand that many pro athletes are rather clueless when it comes to the science of their chosen sport. They pretty much just do what their coach tells them to do. To make matters worse, it is possible that Bekele may have gotten away with insufficient preparation in his younger days enough times to think he can keep doing it. There is definitely a chance that Bekele is genuinely clueless.
Bekele simply isn’t built for the thon. His quads are too big.
He doesn’t have the desire to put in the insane training cause he already accomplished a stellar track career.
He is focused on business endeavors which quite frankly will benefit himself and others more in the future.
Unlike Kipchoge he actually lives with his family. I wouldn’t trade seeing my childrem like Kipchoge has to run fast. No money or fame is worth that.

His quads may be "too big," but he is the same human being who threw down a 2:03 in Berlin two years ago. So, I'm skeptical of that argument.
I agree that it's important to spend time with your kids, but how much does training really take away from that?

But he wasn't in shape to run that time in that race.
It's stupid to say someone was on 2 whatever pace. Your final time is what pace you were capable of.
Rojo ftw!

What kind of twisted logic is that? You're assuming that individuals always run their perfect race. As if that's a given.
Not sure which is more of an idiot? The agent or the athlete here.

Ummm ... ever heard of Mo Farah?
Isn't he a fairly well off and successful business man these days?
I don't know what's going on, but I'm sceptical of the "just collecting appearance fees" argument people are throwing around.
