The later-than-usual start of that Olympiad was done to avoid Mexico's rainy season, which usually runs from May to early October.
Avoid heat?
I'll just never understand why they keep making some big deal of Beamons jump that year. I mean its at high altitude and there is a possibility of adding almost half a meter to your jump. It doesn't count. If that's Beamons longest jump than Hall is most definitely a 2:04 marathoner.
Also, funny how they keep asking how long the long jump record has been around. If you have the World Champs at 7-8000 feet every couple of years, then yeah, it would be broken rather quickly if they're going to count high altitude jumps.

Then why weren´t there any other spectacular jumps in that competition?
As I recall the triple jump record was broken 5 times in the span of 30 minutes.
Also, there were gusting and swirling winds at times during the games, yet none of the
wind gauges ever recorded above 1m/s. Rumor had it that they were rigged.
Consider that in the history of the world, many athletes tried jumping at altitude (Lewis included) but none of them jumped further. It was a unique and special moment.
Also consider that it's winter in July in some parts of the world. The summer olympics are usually in the winter for many people.
Just like the Qatar World Cup being in December instead of June.
Why didn’t you ask why were the 1964 Tokyo games held in October?
The 1991 Tokyo hamoionships were in the end of August.
We understand they were waiting for winter to end for the Melbourne Olympics down under.
Beamon was a perfect combo. 2m/s wind tailwind, altitude asisted with the firmest track in athletics history. No one else jumped very far in that games because Beamon set the record in the 4th jump of the whole competition and it started to rain heavily just after.
It's possible that those games were moved to avoid the rainy season. But even in July and August, rainy days probably have more hours of sunshine than rain. A typical day might be moderately humid from morning to 5pm. Rain from 5 to 6:30 (sometimes a lot) and then clear and dry. In September and October you'll get the effects from a hurricane, either from the Pacific or Atlantic. They are not close to hurricanes in the mountains but a lot of rain from what was a hurricane. It is never hot in Mexico City. A July day might have intense sun but it rarely is 90 degrees. Remember it's about 7200' high. Without looking I'd guess Winnipeg has a hotter July and August than Mexico City.
isn't it because of the mexicans observing ramadan , or something like that.
