There's almost no races nowadays that only cost 20 dollars where I live. Most are around 50 dollars.

These are the words of Lord Stan who was born near Disney and ascended the Sea World Sky Tower.
In many places you can support local running communities by running races put on by local running clubs, which are generally MUCH cheaper than the big ones put on by remote for-profit companies that don't care at all about running communities.
Why would anyone pay more per hour to run than they make at their job?
I can usually get comped entries so it's more about considering the cost of travel and the hotel. So if you count that as part of the cost, then yes.
Yes!
However, since I no longer compete I don't race. I just run for me.
I usually just bandit races. I don't give a crap about an ugly shirt and a useless coupons. Most races around here don't give good prizes anyway.
I pick like 4 races a a year that i really want to do and train for and cost is not a factor
If i were to throw in some tune up races, it might be if i felt the cost was totally unreasonable

Well you live in a relatively value priced region (the south) where the good old American dollar still holds value. This is possible because the gem of the south, Texas, has enough oil to keep our economy from collapsing. Ezekiel bread probably lives in some liberal sh!thole where everything costs triple what it should.
