I would also say don't forget about Peter Norman, the Australian who took the silver medal. His life was forever changed by this event and due to his support for it, not for the better. Sadly he passed away in 2006.
We are all so glad that they brought politics onto the Olympic stage, and that the Palestinians built upon that in 1972, bringing "awareness" to their own cause.

And lets not forget the incredibly effective boycotts which followed through the 70s and 80s which changed world history so powerfully while only sacrificing the careers of a few thousand athletes in the process.

Agreed. Peter Norman was shunned for his support of Tommie Smith and John Carlos. He wasn't selected for the 1972 Olympic games either because of this and many other things as well. Eventually the Australian came around and offered an apology but that wasn't until after Peter had passed away.
Imagine if a gold winning athlete appeared on the podium wearing a klan hood...
