The draw of having pacers has vanished. Pacers were interesting for the WR attempts, but Kipchoge has put an end to that. (For the most part, a lot of people still want to see, say, Galen get the AR.)
Now, to keep the marathon interesting, they need shift focus on championship style races... and then, we only need to watch the final 1k. Maybe we should just go back to the track.

As you say, championship style races are incredible boring because you just could skip the first 40k. So no, it doesn't keep the marathon interesting.
