I found out three weeks ago I have a sacral stress fracture on my right side.. and have done zero cross training/anything since the diagnosis.
I am just curious as to if anyone has been through this injury, and how their back felt throughout the recovery? I was told 6-8 weeks and I could probably start trying to slowly run again, but considering I can still feel it walking around after 3 weeks of nothing, I’m worried I won’t be so lucky. But hopefully that’s normal!
Any advice would be appreciated!
Extra Info: I was told crutches wouldn’t help, and it doesn’t hurt to walk around, but I can feel discomfort for sure. Especially sitting for a long time, it begins to throb. *** However, yesterday I could hardly feel it walking around, but then I decided to do a couple minutes of very light stretching in my hipflexors, and as soon as I stood up I felt pain right on the spot in my lower back.. I also feel very tight in my groin walking around (though that has been constant since the injury..)
Pre- diagnosis: I am a 20 year old female, running D1 track and cross country. I just started back running in July after an IT band release surgery on my right knee.. and I assume I started back too fast with the speed work :/
Started feeling pain out of no where on my sacrum end of August, but continued to run through it (as much as I could..) for two more weeks, because my trainer assumed it was a strained pirformous muscle.) I eventually had to take two weeks of just swimming/biking before I tried to run again, and after 15 minutes of extreme pain, I had to walk and got the MRI later that week.
I am going to be conservative with my return to training, but would love an idea of when I should start cross training, what cross training would be best for this injury, and when I could anticipate running again! Also, what is normal for a stress fracture to feel like after any number of weeks, so I don’t freak out if I feel a random pain!
(Ps- I am of course communicating with my doctor, but I always find experience helpful.)
