In the hopes that you'll buy a lot of crap you don't need.
To sell widgets and gidgets and gadgets to all the hobby joggers who want to look cool.
And to trick the somewhat more serious runners into thinking that buying such-and-such a product (hurry! offer ends tomorrow!) will improve their times.

More and more marathons have an option (paid of course) to have your bib + t-shirt mailed to you. Very useful if you're traveling into a race and get in late.
