XC season just ended, not doing track. How should I train?

Junior in HS here, just ran a mediocre last race and got bumped off of varsity so my season is officially at a close. I did walk away with a okay PR of 17:10, although I was really hoping to break 17. Did about 40 mpw during the summer, and then 45-50 during the season. I'm not going to be running track (schedule conflicts and coach problems) so I was wondering how I should train for the next 9 months until season rolls around again? Should I just build base or should I also consider running some halfs (maybe full) or maybe club indoor?

Look up summer of malmo and do that for your winter training.

Race two or three May 10K races. Wear trainers when you race the 10K's.

He's at a very solid program. If a 8th or 9th person running a 17:09 cannot make varsity XC, what will he do on T&F team? At that school, most likely needs a 2:05 800m to be a top four 800m person.

Is indoor track an option? Figure out a way to make outdoor track work.

Thank you all for the responses. The main reason why I'm shying away from outdoor is mainly because we have a different coach than during cross country that doesn't exactly know much about distance. A lot of people typically get injured during track season, and his workouts typically consist of only short intervals and very little mileage (20-25). I'm trying to get with a private coach and do club indoor as our school doesn't so it. Would racing a couple of 10K's and half's instead of track be an okay alternative?

Listen up buttercup, life isn't always fair. Unfortunately you have a conflict with the coach. Deal with it, don't run away from it. Let him know your concerns. If that is too intimidating maybe your mommy can go along with you and hold your hand. Or maybe just have mommy fight your battles for you. If you think you need more miles (and maybe you do) just run more on the weekends and maybe once or twice in the morning before school. Will the rest of the distance team also not be running track? If they are, you should too. If the only person not running is you, maybe YOU are the problem.

You need to get faster. Racing longer distances isn't going to be the key for that.

Just train more for the shorter distances. You CAN race longer races as part of your training but don't base your training specifically for them.

Racing long distances is exactly the key for that. Speed isn't the problem for this kid, it is lack of aerobic development.
