I know it's arbitrary, but that's how I see it.
A five minute difference once you get below 2:30 is massive. Nothing against a 3 against marathoner. It's just a hobby for everyone above 2:15, and even above 2:12 it's not putting much food on the table.
It's not about elite, that's just Nike Marketing...OBVIOUSLY:)
If you're breaking 2:30, you're not putting food on the table, but it's still beyond being a hobby.
I've broken 3 hours a dozen times and I know dozens of 3:30 marathoners who try their best and would do anything to cross the finish line in under 3 hours, but they are trying their best with their ability.
I know a 3:28 marathoner, female, who dropped from 4 hours to that time and did everything you can imagine in training to improve. She'll never be a 3 hour marathoner, but she ran 85 miles a week and hired a coach. No, she's not elite, few are, but it's beyond a hobby when you're making that kind of effort.
By that I mean there a decent runners putting in close to the same miles, they're just faster;). Time wise, she probably spent more hours running per week then they did, because they're faster. Sorry, that's beyond a hobby when you make that kind of effort.
Elite results, no. Elite effort, maybe so although many of you will argue against it. My pr is 2:27:13. I was never an elite, but I respect the efforts of others and realize that many 3:30 marathoner are training hard and racing as fast as they can.
