Good post. I have to point out though, that if Shalane had NOT chosen to welcome/mentor Jorgensen it would have created an uncomfortable situation on the team.
Jorgensen having outsize goals and keeping them private can be taken as self-motivation, but making them public smacks of self-promotion. Compare her with Kipchoge's public statement before Berlin where he said he was only looking to set a PR, although undoubtedly privately he was targeting the WR, and his goal was certainly a realistic one.
Nike is obviously buying in to the Jorgensen storyline and sees it as good publicity for the brand, regardless of how realistic her goals are. Very unlikely they would have taken on any other 30+ 2:41 marathoner, regardless of their talent level.
And here is what I don't get about the "LEAVE GWEN ALONE!!!" camp. No one is saying Gwen is a bad person. She seems likable enough. Obviously her fanbase is big and loyal. She has legit claims to greatness in the Tri world and all the commercial success that comes with it. But denying that her comments about the marathon were tone-deaf, naive, and out-of-touch is just a refusal to recognise things for what they are. People are too polite (not here, necessarily, but in the world of opinion that matters in running). If you care about the sport you should try police its integrity a little bit. That means shunning dopers, for instance. It means raising fair questions about pacers, prize money, and gender equality. It also means calling out BS storylines that are pushed by people with commercial agendas (shoe companies, journalists, and athletes alike). Breaking2 had a similar issue, and lots of people rightly sounded off beforehand, but Kipchoge's performance redeemed it all because he's Kipchoge. I don't see that happening here.
