Really? Damn, was not aware of this. Any chance you can link me to some articles about this?

Probably not what u want to hear, but it yea, you’re too big. If you’re running the 400 or 800 you’re okay, but not for distance. What’s with the weightlifting insistence anyway? You’re either a distance runner or a lifter
FWIW, I was 5’8” and 120 lbs when I ran. That’s 1.76 lbs per inch. You’re at 2.32
You can gain strength and explosiveness without gaining mass.
Train in such a way.
What are you currently doing?
Alan
Haven't deadlifted since the summer, but I could do a rep of 350 lb (with much effort) that I was very proud of. In regards to squat, I mostly did weighted lunges, and never tested my max squat but I was able to squat reps of 250. Once again with overhead press, never tested my max but I was doing solid sets with an 80 lb barbell.
Andrew Wheating was 6'5, 175 ibs and he ran 1:44 for 800m and 3:30 for 1500m.

Except you’re running XC, not the 800 nor the 1500. 20 extra lbs is manageable for those distances but is hard to carry over XC distance. Could also contribute to injury (bear in mind that I am speaking as a distance runner. And no, I do not consider 800 and 1500 to be distance events)
Starting senior year and going through this past summer, I started getting serious with weight training. Deadlifts, squats, weighted lunges, for legs. In regards to the upper body, I was working with kettlebells (also benefitting legs), shoulder press, benching, curls (dumbbells and barbells). I would also include some calisthenic days doing pushups and pullups, (I do core almost every day). I also do heavy battle rope workouts for the shoulders.

I assume you mean 80 ibs dumbbell. Anyways those are really good stats for your weight. If I was you I'd focus on maintaining strength, increasing mileage and eating a well-balanced healthy diet. Too many runners have ruined themselves by becoming too obsessed on the scale. Sara Hall doesn't even weigh herself and she is one of the best US female marathoners. Which is a good thing as her husbands testosterone issues was probably due in part to him being too lean.
Yes, I did mean dumbbells. And definitely maintaining a healthy diet has become a little more difficult with college cafeterias. If anyone has a simple yet effective diet plan to get calories and protein, send it my way please!
You're too big, carrying excessive muscle around on your arms and chest just wastes oxygen. There's a reason all the greats are slim.

Ever heard of Garrett Heath? 165 ibs at 6'1, 3:34 1500m, 13:16 5000m, 27:56 10000m and he's pretty good at XC.

+1
Also jumping in on this thread and would also appreciate a good diet/strength training plan to lose some of my, “done with running” gym weight. I posted on LR not too long ago through a different name (JFlo runs) about coming back to running/racing, but found my old account so I’ll be using this one.
Anyway, OP, have you thought about doing a bod-pod? It’s much more accurate than the skin pulling calipers and hopefully can give you some insight on how much lean body mass you have. A buddy also mentioned to me that I might be eating too much protein so maybe that could be an issue for you as well. I’m 5’10, 180 lbs btw.
PS. Would like to add that I saw someone mention lifting for running than bulking. Definitely agree with this and honestly, i admit it’s been difficult for me to come to terms with the reality of this statement and losing size. You don’t have to quit the gym or even quit lifting heavy, but if you want fast times, the days of lifting for bulk and looking good could be put on the back burner until after your decide to stop running altogether. Lifting heavy for runners is great, but maybe lifting heavy right now might have to be put on hold until you shed the weight. The sad realization I’ve come to lol.

Frequency? Typical reps? Sets? What’s your program? Or are ya just winging it? What are you actually doing?

And Peter Snell weighed in the 170s and was like 5’10”.
