I think Meb ran 1:09-1:10 at the Indy Mini this year. So he basically hobby jogs a 1:10 half.
No wonder Meb had so many late career heroics. The fire still burns.

Uh, did Meb ever actually retire? I recall he did his retirement Boston marathon , then his retirement marathon in NYC two years ago, then his retirement half marathon, then last year did NYC marathon as a retired runner..... so Ithink Meb has a different interpretation of retired runner.
Salazar should go for it.
I see he suffers from Joan Samuelson syndrome.
Some people can't let go of the limelight. They need constant attention an ego strokes. Meb seems like that.
They both are making constant announcements about what they are doing, seeking attention. Never wanting to step aside to let the younger guys take over.
Losing mad respect for Meb.
No need to lose respect for him. It doesn't diminish what he's already done. Pretty normal for people to want to remain relevant even as they age age past their prime. Personally, I don't think he'll make the team, but it would be cool seeing him there giving it a shot.
Cool story, bro.
Go Meb
Considering the lack of 'thon talent in the U.S. he should go for it. Probably getting sick of the wife and kids. A man needs a hobby, even if it is jogging really fast.
M.A.G.A.
That would be great to watch him see what he can do at age 44 but I would almost rather some see 2:14 rando get an Olympic spot
I figure he goes 2:18 at the trials and finishes top 10, which is pretty astounding for 45 or whatever
everyone that finishes behind him should be forced to go to grad school in STEM immediately unless they're younger than like 25
I agree that he probably would get in the 2:18 range. Granted, that is a great time but not enough to make the team.
Every year after 40 there is a pretty steep decline.
He should try because he would always wonder if he could have done it.
He most likely, if he attempts it, will be disappointed with the result but happy that he gave it the old college try.
Until USDA completes all investigations , whether Meb is involved or not, we collectively should not get too excited. I’m willing to wait and see what ever unfolds.

Hmm. I believe in meritocracy and America. Who ever gets the spot deserves it the most. There is no alternate version of reality where I’d “rather see” xyz get the spot despite not being the most capable on that day. But I don’t live in a cuckhold reality where we’re owed things we haven’t earned.
not always.
Everybody can agree that Mr. Rupp deserves it the most but if he comes to the starting line slightly injured and can't complete the distance as was the case in Boston then the guy who deserves it the most won't make the team.
It would be great to see an under the radar guy make it. It would give many the idea that possibly they can do it also.
THE MAN LOVES TO RUN
Not that American marathon running is weak or anything but..
I have ZERO problem with Meb racing in the Trials, even if he just wanted to do a victory lap and hobby jog a 3 hour pace. Hell, have him shake hands with people and take selfies during laps. Doesn't bother me at all; he's earned that right.
What bothers me, and it isn't on Meb but on the state of US men's marathon running, is that if Meb took this seriously, it's not that far fetched that he could make the team again.
I know this has been an odd year with Boston and most top Americans going to NYC, but no US athlete outside of Rupp has even broken 2:12 this year and NYC is a challenging course.
Is it really that far fetched that Meb could make the Olympics if he was still in 2:13-2:14 shape? Luke Puskedra was 4th last year in 2:14:12? I know last year was hot and only 18 guys even broke the 2:19 qualifying time, but still.
Believing he can run 2:12-2:13 and actually doing it are completely different things. I think the chance of him getting back to this level are pretty slim.

Agreed my friend. The man LOVES to run, and just so happens to be an elite world class athlete. If it's true he's still logging 60-70 mile weeks, he likely hasn't lost much fitness at all. Obviously not trials ready, but I'd love to see what comes from it.

you know what's funny? that's the attitude that he's faced most of his professional career. I remember watching the 2012 London Olympic Marathon and he was not even introduced--despite the fact that he was the ONLY person in the field with an Olympic Marathon medal! And he finished 4th!!!
If anyone could pull it off, it would be Meb. He has the racing talent, and knows how to control a race. He has old-man strength now and more guts than any other American runner than i've ever seen. It's conceivable that he could run 2:12 and place 2nd or 3rd to take a spot, and finish in the top 10 in the Olympics.
