I dont think the criticism is just that his first HM was too fast. That is probably debateable, maybe he really is in 2:11 shape, in which case 65 mid is appropriate.
The criticism is that the first half of that HM was way too fast. There was a nice chase pack that was perfect for him if he wanted to shoot for 2:11ish. The pacer splits were announced ahead of time, there was really no excuse to go out with the lead pack when it was clearly too fast.
At CIM, he went out in 65 and absolutely blew up, he ended up walking! So if he thought he was in much better shape in Boston, he should go out the same pace. Instead, he went out at 62 pace for the first 10k.
I'm not trying to be a hater, I would love to see a passionate guy training seriously hard do well. But he has to he smart and realistic to reach that point. If your PR is 2:18, dont go out at 2:04 pace. Go out at 2:11 pace if you think youre in way better shape. Hit that and try to improve from there in your next race.
