I was one of those who thought Rupp had a chance against Farah. Experience was one reason for this, familiarity with the course was another. But really, given everything I've seen of the two runners so far, it was about stride. Farah strikes the ground hard when he runs; it's part of what made him so good on the track. Rupp is bigger than Farah, but his stride is smoother and seemingly more amenable to the wear and tear of the marathon.
Probably the most over-stated considerations consistently advocated by runners ... marathon experience, having run the course before. So many had Rupp not running well in Old Trials because he had no experience, and Farah's first was still a 2:08. Others have fared well first few times at the marathon (Jones, Treacy). Stride too, running economy is what matters, and Farah hasn't posted his VO2 and velocity, so who knows.
