I don't disagree. That seems like a reasonable test of general strength.
Tall, skinny and middle aged, I went from 5x1 to 5x3 and the development, mostly definition, in my back and arms is quicker than I have seen anywhere else from lifting any other way. I think people who skip them because they can't do many , or even 10, are missing out. The way things are going, If I can get to 5x5, I will be ripped.
for what?
Skinny guy at 120 pounds knocks out 16 pulls ups.
Big guy 240 pounds can only do 8.
Skinny guy can't budge 300 pounds on the bench, big guys knocks out 4 reps.
Hmmmm?
48 year old dad. 3 times a week I do 8 sets of 5 (proper) pull ups w/20 lb dumbbell between my knees, in addition to my regular lifting. I run 3 or 4 days a week. Former 145lb wimpy distance runner who's currently 5'9" and 175 lbs.
As a result of all the pull ups I have both golfers elbow AND tennis elbow in both arms, and I neither golf nor play tennis. Oh well.
So you do a ton of pullups to achieve pseudo-manlet status...
now you have terrible tendonitis as a result?
Is this a satisfactory result to you? (keeping mind you're probably
in better shape than 90% of people your age)

I hate to hear this for you but was relieved to hear this.
I started back doing pull-ups awhile ago and worked my way up to 15 'proper' pull-ups/chin-ups. I would actually switch between the 2 every few months.
I developed golfers elbow pretty bad in my left arm. Sucks. I don't do a lot of strength training but my elbow really limits what I can do.
I'm 48 also. I would just do 2 max sets 3 or 4 times a week. Sometimes I would throw in a dumbell for more resistance.

Big guy fights off two assailants and is stabbed to death in the process...skinny guy shoots them both in the face...your point?
I'll confess, I'm too weak. 54 and the last decade just got away from me... strength-wise.
Tips for an older codger looking to get some basic strength back?
Pull-ups. What other exercises would you recommend for someone feeling like he's starting from scratch again?
Thanks.
I'm going to take a break from pull ups this winter, probably 6 weeks or so. I'll then start back up slowly.
Good luck to both of us.
Sounds like you are doing pull ups wrong?

Get a bench and a pair of adjustable dumbbells. I have some that go to 72 lbs each (they're actually in kilos; I had to make a conversion chart because I'm American).
Tuesday and Friday I do this (3-5 sets of 8-12 reps):
* Dumbbell press
* Overhead press
* Lat raise
* Triceps extensions
* Reverse flys
* 3 sets of dips
* I 'superset' my pull ups in between the other exercises so that I get 8 sets of 5. Speeds up the workout. Takes me about an hour. I also do pull ups on Sunday. Start off EASY. Our tendons and ligaments are do not recover as quickly they used to. Joho and I can attest.
As a rule I skip leg day, but I run the other days -- 4-5 miles, or light intervals, hills, or drills.

I was doing regular ol' pull ups like Uncle Sam taught me in the military. I didn't do them for many years, until last year when I started doing the Russian Fighter pull up program to see if I could hit 20 again. My muscles could handle it but my tendons couldn't. I do neutral grip pull ups now. They're fine when I'm actually doing pull ups, it's the next day that I'm really sore. Aleve helps a lot.
You wonder why you got tendonitis? It's because you're doing all this fluff and pump BS. Don't do tricep extensions. And why do over head press with dumbbells and barbells? Just do one or the other.

Funny, I read this morning that triceps extension can cause elbow issues. I'll probably drop those and see if that helps.
I don't use barbells, just dumbell chest presses and O/H presses.
Thanks, Bro.

Guilty! And I don't care. I believe I can speak for 99.9% of Americans in saying that.I
I get winded pushing a cart around Walmart.
This is a running forum. Pull ups do not matter for running. Why is this on a running forum
If I am "on" my pullups for a month or so, it takes about 6 months for me to atrophe to the point where I can no longer do 10. It takes about a month doing pullups twice a week to get from that point to doing 4 sets of 10 again.
I have a similar experience with pushups. About 4 months ago, I ended 3 weeks of doing one set of pushups to failure every day (a bad workout regimen, I know). I started those 3 weeks only able to do 40 and ended able to do 105. I did pushups yesterday for the first time since then and was able to do 80 to failure.
Just a related point, not directly relevant to the OP. I just find it interesting how certain things take a while to fade, strengthwise.
