Is it safe to buy running shoes on Amazon? Adidas I want are selling for $98 on Amazon. Regular price is $140. I've read about fake shoes on Amazon. Have they cleaned that up?

Just got a pair of adidas on Amazon. They seem legit, but I'm not sure how to tell if they're counterfeit? Maybe check reviews of the actual seller.
Have bought 20+ pairs of Asics/Brooks on Amazon. Never received fakes, shoes have always been new and at a good price.

Amazon is legit. They don't have to pay rent for retail stores and have proportionality far fewer employees so they can charge significantly less. And if you think there is a problem you can send it right back.
Of course. A lot of those shoes actually ship from other online shoe stores like Zappos or Shoebacca for example. You can even see that in the amazon listing.
Yes. It is OK to buy running shoes on Amazon. I've been doing it for years, no issues at all.
I also buy a lot from Running Warehouse too.
I would be a little leary..
I bought a pair of Apple earpods from Amazon that were total fakes..
in general, you have to look at who is selling. Amazon is just the intermediary in many cases.
of course, but i mean there is the original product on amazon for the same price as the apple store, so anything cheaper than that might be fake.
Look at who the seller is on Amazon. If it's Amazon or an authorized seller for the brand I have no reservations. Even no name sellers I would buy from but I would do some research into them first.

The "Apple earpods" you bought were fake? You don't say...

I'm lucky that the seller eventually gave my money back
Much as i detest the concept of amazon, this is completely incorrect.
You were not 'lucky', you were actively protected by Amazon's amazing after sales service.
Credit where credit is due. Amazon, goddamn them, fully recognise the dangers and advantages of customer satisfaction and go out of their way to provide a good shopping experience.
Its safe to buy from amazon or normal retailers on amazon. Check who the seller is. Some sellers are good, but low rated sellers are where the scams come into play.
simple things like climate controlled warehouses can have a huge effect on deadstock so be aware of who you are purchasing from
Amazon sold me what I think were fake Nike shorts and I felt lucky to get a refund but tbh it would be luckier not to get fake items in the first place.
I sell goods on Amazon and I have also heard that there are cases where counterfeit goods are sold there. If you look at the situation from a buyer's point of view, you should probably pay attention to the reviews of the seller and the licenses for the goods. I'll speak as a seller. Amazon takes sales tax, and often it varies from region to region and state to state. Some categories of items are not taxed, also the tax does not have to be paid in all states, so the price of the same items may vary. You can read more about this here - https://sageseller.com/blog/what-amazon-sellers-need-to-know-about-filing-taxes/, this information will be helpful to both buyers and sellers.
I got a pair of Freedom 1s for under $30 about a couple years ago and they were definitely real for what it's worth. Adidas models also go on sale much more often than those of other brands from what I've seen, even if the updated iteration hasn't come out yet.

I bought some Puma running trainers and when they arrived they turned out to be doll's shoes filled with Dynomite.
They were not safe, but this IS safe:
