Maybe that's the old business model, having a kit sponsor?

Maybe it's best when Royal Dutch, HSBC, and Vodafone are your sponsors and not some marginal footwear and apparel brands.

That would be the gold standard, but sadly unlikely to happen for athletic stars.

Runners of note, on the whole, will have a kit sponsor; so it's notable when a runner does not.

The companies you mention are blue chip, global & hi prestige, and are unlikely to sponsor an individual runner. I don't think even Usain Bolt at his zenith secured a top top endorsement deal outwith sporting manufacturers ?

I would see those firms inking individual deals with F1 drivers and tennis players and round the world sailors.

IT kinda seems like running is messed up in the UK, like other things. There was a tweet from Lily Partridge saying how she was having to pay her own travel and for her own healthcare since teh national health system wasnt responsive enough. Now I have no idea how good Lily is or isn't, but I have the impressiojn that in the US she would at least be able to snag a hoka sponsorship and have someone looking out to make sure she gets proper medical care. Meanwhile that whole twitter conversation was just complaining about how there wasn't enough/any national funding for Lily; in the US that would be taken care of by the private sector mostly I suspect.

The House of Run ep a few ago w/ Ato Boldon had Ato saying Sydney McLaughlin wasn't going to just stop at shoe sponsorships, she was gonna go beyond, she was gonna get that MAYBELLINE and CLAIROL money! $

I did not know she spoke French.

I posted on here asking about this a while back and got no response. I don't understand why she would be dropped by Nike? She is young, has continued to run good times, and seemingly has a good social media presence.

i haven't lived in the UK for a long time and others will be able to correct me if things have changed - but most runners would not expect the NHS to provide all their sports injury treatment and physio services; but would be perfectly fine with the NHS providing all "normal" healthcare. i am sure "paying her own healthcare" isn't the same as it would be in the US, but more like paying for her sports related healthcare which will be a small fraction of the cost, and something most runners expect to do.

Sorry but you are a bit out of date Bob. The current term for a collection of garments that you might wear to compete in Track and Field, Cross Country, Soccer, Cycling and others is a KIT. This is true even in the good old USA. It has almost totally replaced the old "uniform" which is a bit dated.

Pretty sure she is sponsored by Nike.

Can’t comment on Ms McColgan’s sponsorship or lack of, but last year she had to appeal against her loss of lottery funding, despite making an Olympic final. It basically boiled down to her event being too competitive at the moment and her being unlikely to win medals on a global stage. They got that one spectacularly wrong!

British lottery funding is odd, very few athletes actually get it and some odd decisions are made in supporting athletes who had one good result several years ago but have done nothing since, yet denying funding for up and coming athletes. And take out the relay athletes, and far higher numbers of para athletes are supported than able bodies, presumably because pars sports are dominated by a few countries and para athletes are more likely to win medals. And of course it’s very politically correct - the BBC constantly rams the message home, along with promoting poster boy Mo Farah at every opportunity in glowing terms.

She used to be sponsored by Nike Inc. ...she even covers the swoosh from her racing briefs...

The NHS is very good at responding to emergencies ... if you break a leg or get infected with a nerve agent like Novichok ... you'll get treatment immediately.

If you rock up saying "I need a sports massage because my calves are a bit tight" you're going to be out of luck.

If you have a injury you will get physio / treatment / scans for it but it could take you 2-3 months to get appointment. I think that's what she means about it being non-responsive.
