OK so after not racing properly for a while I have a Marathon this weekend (flat and hopefully therefore fast). Hoping to snag a late BQ entry for registrations the following day as well as PB, but I know I haven't done the training really.
PBs
5k: 16:45 (2015)
10k: 35:24 (2016)
1/2: 1:17:36 (2015)
Mara: 2:59:46 (2016)
BUT these were all when I was Ironman training and so spent a lot of time doing hard bike intervals every week. I only ever used to run 25-30 mpw max when I did this.
I took last year of any form of triathlon training and did a bit more running, but still only averaged 28 mpw in the 15 weeks before a spring marathon, only 3 of these were over 30 miles and only 1 of these were over 40 mpw. I hit half way in the mara in 1:29 but blew up about 16 miles in and just jogged it home
This year I started some triathlon training again, though nowhere near as much, and just got round a 1:23:40 half mara in March. I stopped swimming and cycling completely in April though after spraining an ankle and gave up running for a few weeks. Signed up for a mara this weekend and started training properly about 10 weeks ago. In the last 10 weeks have averaged 35 mpw but 4 of these over 40mpw and 1 over 50mpw (still low I know but happy with that amount of time spent training).
Past few marathon pace sessions...
• 5 weeks ago l I ran 58 minutes / 8.9 miles at 2:51 pace (6:32/mile) with even splits, but I was completely done at the end of this and had to get the bus home rather than the 2 mile jog back
• 9 days ago I ran 60 minutes / 8.8 miles at 2:57 pace (6:44/mile) but was slower the second half and struggling for the last 10 mins, was right in the middle of a 22 miler though so had already been running an hour at this point
• 5 days ago I ran 51 minutes / 7.6 miles at 2:55 pace (6:41/mile) but the second half was actually quicker than the first and felt like I could probably continue at that pace, this was part of a 16 miler and had probably ran about 4 miles before this point and then continued for a few more miles not that much slower than 3 hour mara pace and felt OK
Interval sessions have been too infrequent to notice much but I know I'm slower than two years ago. When I ran my 2:59 pb two years ago I lacked running endurance, and after deciding to sign up and race only 10 days before I blew up massively at 20 miles or so, but back then I believe I was probably capable of 2:50-55 if I had done any long runs (longest was 15 miles a week before the race).
Any thoughts from the above sessions what this could look like this weekend? Plan was to go out at 2:58 and try to hold on... but I know I might just blow at some point.
Always fun to play these games. Never been the OP though to one
