Is it a major disrespect to others to use a race as a tempo workout (whatever that means)

But they’re still doing mileage, no intervals, and pack running!
no
No.
But you sound like an insecure douche after the race whenever someone asks you how you did, you add "but I was just tempoing it".
Most local races I fartlek it and toy with the field.
it depends....running your local road race as workout? who cares, do what you want
a college runner running at their only home meet on a scholarship paid for by the fans watching the meet? yeah, kinda disrespectful
Sounds like a waste of money. Why pay a race fee just to temp it.
I feel like people who use the "tempo" excuse aren't in shape enough to be competitive, so that's their fallback.
"I could have won it if I tried"
"Sure, buddy"
“That was just a tempo effort” - says some 25min 8k college dude. Yeah sure suck my nuts and nut up
I see nothing disrespectful about using a race as a tempo. It can make a long tempo run feel like less of a grind.
Of course like many things, how you act makes a difference. If you finish and start telling everybody in sight that you were just tempoing, that is disrespectful to anybody you beat and looks really lame.

It's more disrespect to the word "tempo" because nobody actually runs at their tempo pace when they say they used a race as a tempo or threshold workout.
All of my races are done at tempo effort. That's how I know I'm faster than the winner.

It comes from football.

Not if you don't announce it to everyone who beats you.

Not true. Football teams tend to eat up all their own profit.
toggle between revenue and expenses on here and you'll see only the top 20 teams show any real profit at all.....and this is just the top 120 DIV 1 teams. I don't imagine they get anymore profitable once you start getting out of the BCS teams, especially when you drop down to Div 2.
also this chart doesn't even include stadium/training facility construction costs which can be enormous.
http://www.espn.com/ncaa/revenue/_/page/1like I said before, it's the tax paying local fans watching that are paying for the scholarships.
Im alright with it. If I really want to push myself on a long run tempo I sign up for a 2 miler or 5 k and run afterwards...I don't mention it though.
At Indiana Intercollegiates in 1993 Bob Kennedy did a fartlek workout during the race. I was in a pack of about five with him through 1k and he hammered from 1k to 2k, then stopped and waited for us to catch up, then ran with the pack from 2-3k, then hammered from 3-4k. He did this the whole race. At the end he waited for a teammate to catch up to him and let him win.
We weren’t mad about it. Just impressed.
What it means is that you don't taper or anything, so the race doesn't interfere with you training.

Cash prizes. Tempo for a few hundred bucks at local road races, use it to travel to bigger races.
You're obviously not a sub elite runner.
