The author’s comments about Letsrun are about spot on, but also reports that 4% of male runners are harassed on runs, which is almost definitely false (depending on the definition of harassment, of course).

imgine when they start quoting the posts about lynchings and CrazyGary's rants about exterminating non-conservatives with fire and AR-15's.

Responses on the popular Let's Run online forum ranged from "all runners get heckled" to "just get a treadmill".
I was thinking of getting my best friend a dagger for her birthday. This wasn’t just any dagger off Amazon, but an Icelandic one if I can get my hands on it.
Just like how girls are taught to say no, they should also be taught to at minimum, be able to slam their foot in someone’s balls and cause internal bleeding.
Shoes are considered a weapon in assault and battery cases - deadly weapons.
Anyone can cause brain damage using their elbows and hitting someone’s temples.

What shoes was Mollie Tibbetts wearing when she was running? Just curious...
From the article:
Ms Hamilton recalls a huge response from male runners - a mix of support and scorn. Some called the claims ridiculous while others said women just needed to learn how to protect themselves.
"Even when they talk about murder, the question is: was she running alone? As if she shouldn't be," Ms Hamilton says. "Only now are people starting to say 'he shouldn't harass her'."
The implication that it is only males who will comment such as "was she running alone? As if she shouldn't be" is complete bs or poorly researched by the author.
I hear this type of comment regarding women who are attacked from women as well as men. Maybe it's society in general which needs to change rather than simply males.
No way peeps.
The potential of harm for women is real and omnipresent. Males are bigger and faster and more aggressive. Not conducive to civil peace. I wouldn't enjoy that risk.
The key is women should be taught and encouraged to respond to any form of harassment they encounter. If women tended to respond back to the harassers two things would happen (in general): 1) men would quickly be socialized to not act like jackasses and 2) women would realize responding deescalates the situation rather than escalate it. What doesn't work is ignoring the situation and expecting the jackass to stop on his own accord. Clearly a dude who feels compelled to call out sexually to a strange woman and/or make threatening overtures (e.g., follow her around) does not have good judgment or impulse control. Hence, assume the worst and cut it off at the pass. Often just yelling and/or verbally abusing him back is enough to end it.

LOL, the males on this board aren't bigger or more aggressive. Faster, maybe.

None of them attack women either, despite all of their other deficiencies.
Any one of them would have defended her wrote:

Plenty of them harass women though. Just a word to the wise, if you harass expect a swift response.

None is not plenty.
I’m female and I’m with the posters above who suggested anything from teaching girls/women the reflex of knee-in-the-groin, to mace, to martial arts. If you run alone, depending on where, you may get a weirdo regardless of your gender. Be able to fight back because your life may just depend on it.
I was once harassed on a run on a deserted trail. I told the guy to leave me alone, he wouldn’t. He then threatened my big but friendly dog with a rock. I heard myself say that I would strangle him with my bare hands if he threw that rock. He backed off instantly. I have never been violent in my life (and I wouldn’t have known how anyway), but my point is that when he had threatened me, I politely asked him to stop. Threatening my dog though made me respond in kind. Women aren’t conditioned to get aggressive when we encounter aggression towards us, and we should be. Politeness doesn’t get you very far with a creep.

Thanks. Always a great start to the day when it's only 4 AM and I already have impetus to laugh at conservatives

Awwwww ... good for you. Now spend the rest of the day figuring out how to get your drug fix (without money as you’re too lazy to work) and how you’ll hitch a ride to the Bernie campaign office where you can discuss how all those productive, working people need to support you.
There's a difference between aggressive flirting and a rapist. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Wasn't she killed after she stopped to confront the dude though?
Is anyone else noticing an increase in the amount of harassment they face on runs? I'm a man and I've been harassed 4 times in the last 2 weeks. My girlfriend has also been harassed at least 2x on runs in the same span.

She took out her phone when he caught up with her and said she’d call 911, and he claims he “got mad.” One can only wish she had been able to make the call.
I doubt there was much she could have done differently. He had stalked her in his car and then on foot and had brought a knife with him. Not to sound like a “Law & Order” episode, but I think her fate was sealed when he laid his eyes on her.
Standing your ground is still the best way because it scares most creeps away. Just have your finger on your SOS button if you’ve got one on your device (or on your mace trigger) while you do it in case you’re dealing with a murderer and not just a nuisance.
