Wow. Muir wins it!
Houlihan's tactics cost her. Went out 4th to last on first lap. Too slow. Will post her splits when we have them.
Houlihan's 3rd lap had to be too fast to get contact with leaders.

Man, as a US distance fan, it's hard to watch these races. The big stars for the US - Jager, Coburn, Frerichs, Houlihan, etc - just aren't going with the pace. I still thought Shelby would win. I timed her last 200 in 29.83 but it wasn't enough.
Muir ran with guts. Normally in running, the people who run smart win but today guts was rewarded.
Muir looked great, Houlihan might have taken herself out of the running, but let's remember that Hassan ran a 5k yesterday and if she was fresh, this race would have been over.

Agreed (hard to watch US 'competitors').
It's weird how many US women have been competitive at 1500m but at 5000 they aren't even in the same universe as Obiri, Dibaba, Vivian, Hassan, etc
Congrats to Muir. She's been a bridesmaid for awhile (at least with podium finishes on the global scale). I know she won Euros, but this is a better win IMHO.

I don't think that's actually what happened. Houlihan ran the most even first 1200 of anyone in the race laying off an overly aggressive 61 second opening lap. Muir was simply better the last 200 today.
I agree, this has been hard to watch the past few days. In the steeple, it did seem like Coburn just sat on Frerichs and waited to outkick her. Clearly worked though. In the 1500, what happened to Jenny Simpson? She came in last... I thought Houlihan would have had it. Shoot. Hope the continental cup treats her better.
Shelby was a nobody in the 1500 until this year. She just got 2nd in the DL final. I'd say that's pretty damn good! (that being said I think she'll ultimately be a better 5000m runner)

These ( relatively) terrible times today just show that the Monaco trampoline track is a farce. They should throw out the times from the Trampoline... absolute joke.
Outside of the 8:4x, the women's steeple was faster today.
Yeah if you ignore the fast times at Monaco, the times at Monaco were slower. Great logic!
Here are the splits. Houlihan would have been better served going out in 64.0 -2'08".0 instead of 64.5-2'09"3, but still might not have had enough to get Muir who looked like she still had some in the tank the last 100m.

Why?
Wow!!!!
Just read on Twitter that Mondo is wearing his LSU kit in the men's PV.
Sad about Jenny. I wonder if this is it for her admittedly illustrious 1500m career. I'd love to see her take a crack at Shelby's 5000m record but I don't know if that will happen.
Just to build on my point about Houlihan running even. Muir was admittedly fairly even as well, but not to the degree Houlihan was. I certainly don't think you can fault her tactics. She put herself in the right spot with 300 to go in the most efficient way possible, Muir just had another gear as well.
Muir: 63.0, 64.5, 65.8, 45.19
Houlihan: 64.5, 64.8, 64.5, 45.14
Hassan: 62.7, 64.5, 66.3, 45.91
Tsegay: 61.6, 65.3, 65.8, 45.98
Because she ran 14:34 with no one within 25 seconds of her.
That gun went off real quick
By getting out right behind Hassan, Muir was able to run the shortest possible path on laps 2-3. Houlihan had to run slightly further to get around traffic which may have been the final difference.
Whenever someone runs 9.79 I will always hear Charlie Jones.
