Craving dirt or chewing ice is called pica and indicates iron-deficiency anemia, which is suppoeteed by the ferritin counts (athletes need much higher ferritin scores than sedentaries). What is your diet like?
Yes, we've figured this out that's why I mention what they said that made me go ahead and check iron on these 2 as well.
I've looked all over our diets. We're eating a ton of meat and all the other things that we naturally get iron from. And each of them is probably consuming 3200-3500 calories a day... I think it's a combination of genetics, heavy flow, and running that is depleting the ferritin stores.
I'm going to have them take an iron supplement for the next few months and then retest as well. Just wanted to figure out what all these extra bits of information meant that I did not get from the other doctor and why I don't have a number that corresponds w/ the 11.6 and 12.0 that he gave me.
Me:
Ferritin 17
Iron 12.0
TIBC 475
17yo:
Ferritin 7
Iron 11.6
TIBC 532
I didn't look those back up so I might not be exactly right but it's close enough for govt work anyway.
