Hello all,
I am having some issues and desperately need help. I have lived in Maryland / DC most of my life but have spent the last two summers (May - End of September) in Miami for work. Last summer was my first summer to do this and I completely gave up running (first time in my life) by late July. I am not giving up this summer, even if it means walking, but I need help.
I am a 30 year old male that played soccer through college. I ran track in high school and casually loved it. I always stayed fit by running 25 - 30 miles a week through college. After college, when soccer was over, I focused on 5K - 10K training. And for the past 6 years I have been running 40 - 60 mpw with 2 workouts and a long run every week. I'm not going to say my PBs, but I normally (in Maryland) do easy runs at around 8:00 pace with a heart rate of 110 - 130 (in summer a little more)
Second summer in Miami. Last summer I quit altogether. This summer I have been focusing on just surviving. But when I step outside and start doing a warm-up drill or dynamic stretch, my heart rate is already getting up there. If I want to stay below 165 bpm (my AT), I have to run at around 10:00 pace. Some days I can go 6 miles at most, some days I CAN'T EVEN GO ONE MILE before hitting 165 bpm.
Around early July, it seemed to just hit a wall of impossible. My solution was to just walk whenever I heart rate got to 165. And then I would just end up walking. I am still getting mileage in but many of those miles are walking. And on many easy days my heart rate will hit 180 bpm. I
It is normally 82-86 degrees with 70 - 80% humidity when I run in Miami (early morning). A couple of days ago it was 84 degrees with 90 percent humidity and I found it impossible to even run a 10:00 mile without hitting AT.
A few other details that perplex me. When I go to back to DC, or even Tampa, which is not much cooler, my running is close to being back to normal and have no problem with easy runs, although not as fast as before. DC I understand, but Tampa I do not.
