To the Lets Run Message Boards,
Long time reader, first time thread starter.
A little background on me. I am a male of no remarkable image (probably a 6/10 because that is how bell curves work). I am a post collegiate from a respectable D3 program. PRs of, 5K 15:12, 10K 31:14, 8k XC 24:51 and HM 1:07:55. I am presently training for my true marathon debut, but easy ran/tempo to a 2:40 in June (86 min first half). I believe explaining my times both excludes me as an elite, and elevates me above a hobby jogger. Where I fall between that large expanse is not for me to say.
I understand that in today's day and age, large swaths of marketing money is spent on Social media. I know that it is a place where companies can get tons of eyes on products and can target people from diverse backgrounds. What I am frustrated with, is from the time I was a high schooler, to the present (scope of 8/10 years) I have seen the transition from brand ambassadors having a performance criteria at their heart, to it being only about "likes, posts, and followers". I am not talking about truly sponsored athletes, but individuals who get deals, like 45% off, or $500 worth of free stuff a year. All of these programs have dried up and been replaced with today's brand ambassador, a millennial esq, social media focused, fitness person. An example of a dried up program would be the Saucony Hurricanes.
Honestly, maybe I am in the minority, but I do not decide to use a brand of product because "Sports Bra Sarah" posted a pic after her "hard" 3 mile run and says she wouldn't have made it through without [Insert generic product here]. When I was growing up I saw local guys, in the community, sub elite, but still strong athletes that were using a product, and that is what would peak my interest.
Every November/December, when I look at applying for any of these programs, the questions are only about Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, your number of followers, tweets, and likes. There is nothing about, what your running goals are, your involved in the local running scene, and whats your times/performances. It is all just, how many people can we bate into seeing out product next to your sweaty cleavage.
Am I alone out there, or are there others like me?
