soren knudsen hype train update: 2018 junior mountain team

I don't know his plans or circumstances but this seems like a waste of his talent or potential; why not do everything he can and get as close to his potential as he can on the track and the road before moving to ultra running; kid is 18 years old and should be spending the next 10-12 years on mile-marathon

This young man has so much potential, but he has no direction. He looks only to the immediate future, not to long term development. Who’s directing him, who’s coaching him? If he thinks that immediate self satisfying awards are going to develop long term goals then this is the problem. Who is training him? Who does he work out with? It’s sad that he believes that what he is doing right now will develop him for the years down the road. There are steps and stages to go through and he does not see or understand what needs to be done for future development. How many top notch runners progressed the way he is trying to do it? He does not see what is needed to develop into the runner that he could be. If he develops into the runner with his potential props to him, but the odds are very very slim at best. Look at the look terms, find a program and Coach that can develop this talent not just be self coached,

This isn’t ultra running, it’s mountain running. The two aren’t the same. Ultra refers to the distance, and this is a 7.3km course: definitely not an ultramarathon.

So how many of the junior division mt runners are top runners in their state high school or college runners? It would seem that top runners would be training for their season, not some mt race. The pool to be selected as no bearing on being at the top of the junior division. Is it an honor to be selected for this race, yes but very very watered down. I just feel sorry that it appears that Soren has no direction but only sees very short term goals. Again, how many distance runners can achieve their goals simply on their own. I coached over thirty years and never found one runner that was able to do it completely on their own and I feel that Soren is quickly falling into this situation. Talent only goes so far, then help is needed.

well let me fill you in bro, Soren doesn't race for a "season" he is not enrolled in a school. You say its an honor to be selected for this race and then immediately follow that up saying its watered down. which is it? Soren has direction, I mean he just broke 14 for a 5k 4 months ago and 1 year ago he won state in high school with a 14:05 for a 3 mile with very fast course. Thats a huge improvement. But you say he has no direction based off a 3 month stretch?

Since you claim you are a coach and know exactly how to fix this, I would expect more from you.

And no, I'm not Soren - I have to say this because all the haters on letsrun say that anyone who cheers for him is actually Soren himself. Which is not true. I'm 9 years older but I live in Illinois and am a huge fan. Quit trying to label him. If you are a fan of Illinois running, give this guy some credit. And enjoy the run. We had Chris Derrick, we lost Lukas. Lets enjoy Soren's adventure. He has a lot of potential and it's not all down the drain just because of a shitty 3 month time frame. He is incredible talent and a very hard worker.

Whatever potential Soren has, he’s pissing most of it away. He does not have discipline. If he did, he would stick it out through school and reap the benefits of a college team and training. It’s exactly his lack of discipline why he’s going it on his own and why he will never see the success he may have had. If you think he can reach his full potential on his own, without a team and coach, you are a fool. Almost as big a fool as he is. He needs to grow up and man up. He took the easy, lazy route of wanting to do as he pleases. It’s time for him to stop being a little baby and learn to be humble, to listen and to be coached.

Remember Ryan Hall? He was a great runner. Better than Soren. When he left being coached to being self-coached, that was the beginning of the end. He did good initially at the wind aided Boston, and then what? Slow decline to becoming a weightlifter. Time will tell, but the odds are against Soren doing well on his own. Might be ok if he takes up ultras, but who wants to see him do that?

why do people suggest he can't do both mountain and track races? It's definitely doable to train for both well.
