Hi all, I’ll start off by saying that I’m not much of a runner, but it’s something I’ve been trying to get into. I play college basketball so running is already something that I’m fairly comfortable with, but not for long distances.
I’ve had a nagging pain in my left lower leg for about a year. I ignored throughout the end of our season and then decided I needed to do something about it this summer. I went to see a sports specialist and was diagnosed with just a peroneal muscle strain. Recommended treatment was regular physical therapy and ice.
Physical therapist had me take time off from summer training for 14 days and I was given a strict strengthening program. I am unable to go back to PT now because of the cost and my script was only for a certain number of visits. I am unsure whether or not the pt helped or if it was just taking time off that helped.
It no longer hurts to go up and down stairs or just walk. I haven’t tried running yet because I took time off but I’m starting again today. I have tried foam rolling it and it is still painful to touch and palpate and too painful to foam roll. I’m still icing, stretching, and doing the strengthening exercises.
Anything else I can do? Is it safe to foam roll a strained muscle? Unfortunately, preseason practices start for us in 14 days. Any tips on dealing with this throughout the season? Ideally, I’d like it to go away but I guess if I can just find a way to manage the pain, I will be happy with that.
