I have seen a few clips of the new Magnum PI reboot. As someone who watched the old Magnum PI and loved it, I find the reboot to be really bad.
One of the things I loved about the original Magnum was that Magnum was not a superhero guy. There were a few car chases (if any), but from the clips I have seen this looks like Fast and Furious--oh wait, the director is Justin Lin!
Magnum seemed to want to avoid pulling out his gun if at all possible (very similar to Jim Rockford).
Also, it appears the Higgins character is now a super spy and helping Magnum. Part of the charm of the original was the interplay between Higgins and Magnum. Also, I am betting there develops a love interest between the new Magnum and the new Higgins.
The original balanced being a drama with some comedy quite well.
Plus it made Detroit Tiger baseball caps really popular.
We already have a controversy that there are no Latinx writers (there is 1) although there is a Latino lead.
I bet the Hawaiians will also not be too happy that no Hawaiians are major cast members.
If you want to set a show in Hawaii (I mean what actor does not want to work there?), then start a new show.
Of course I thought the Hawaii 5-0 reboot would not work either.
Speaking of 5-0, how many characters on TV are ex-Navy SEALS? The original Magnum was probably the first one on TV. Now every private eye or similar character on TV (or in movies) is an ex-Navy SEAL or even cops. It might be just as bad in movies. It is interesting that in the Lethal Weapon movies Riggs was a Green Beret but in the TV show the character is now an ex Navy SEAL. No respect of Green Berets (one of my favorite war movies BTW).
