Outrageous Philosophy from High School Coach - Bonneville High School (Idaho Falls, ID)

Not sure if this is a troll or not but I like this coach, wish he was my coach in high school, we would have actually been competitive.

fat people are slow.. thats just the truth, if you want to run a successful program then you should stray away from these kids who just want to come out and "jog" in cross country.. that is why the sport gets the stigma it has in high school because most people take it as a joke. if a kid wants to come out for cross to jog or lose weight then they should do that on their OWN time before or after school. I understand where this coach is coming from because my coach in HS had the same views and we were state contending team every year I was there in TX 5A. On the other hand I am confused why kids have to pay money to be on the team, possibly funding for booster club? the only thing I do not agree with is the lettering BS. If a kid works hard and makes the varsity regardless of how fast he or she ran they should be given there letter..

If this was posted by a coach in California they would be fired within a day. You can't talk about any kid's weight or call anyone fat.

It is the Coach's private blog that is password protected: https://www.beesxc.com/ These are screen shots from the "The Cold Hard Truth !!" section. If it was his own personal philosophies that weren't be communicated to the team, then that would be a different story, but I think it is pretty clear that he wrote this to sent to his athletes for them to read.

I agree that's abusive.

A good coach would focus on the positives and on helping the young people to succeed.

A good coach would not be giving ultimatums to young athletes.

Set standards, sure.

But not making threats and trying to belittle people and push them around.

Yes, this coach is a dick, probably a small one.

But, it is true that fat people are slow. Does not take a rocket scientist to know that.

Double but, no sane person working with HS kids would ever say that, let alone post it online. Fire him.

He sounds like a good coach to me. I think there is one person posting multiple times in this thread under different names that has beef with the coach.

The odd thing is that the domain was owned by a completely different team in 2011.

If this is legit, then there is no question that the coach will be fired once the school finds out. It is pretty much what somebody might write if they were trying to get somebody fired. Or it also sounds like something a kid might write as a prank, not realizing it is a big deal.

If it is made up by a troll or angry parent, then they should be absolutely ashamed of themself. There is a real person who will be affectef by this.

Hey "stop hurting America," why don't you stop trying to hurt this coach by trying to anonymously hurt him on a public website. You are being unnecessarily judgmental, and a bad person.

This coach is trying to teach kids what it means to be a competitive runner. Running fast is fun. That's why a website like letsrun exists in the first place. The coach is trying to teach them the joy you get by taking something seriously, and applying self discipline to get the best from yourself.

As far as the fat shaming. These comments could be harmful if they are directed female athletes who are NOT overweight. But since you just took snippets of the blog, I don't know the context. They might be just directed at the boys. If so, they are entirely truthful and appropriate. Other instructions from the coach might be tailored to the girls to help them prevent the risks of loosing bone density. I don't know, so I'm not going to judge this coach based on your biased selection of his blog post.

If you are actually concerned, why don't you try to contact this coach privately, and ask him if he's aware of the risk of female runners loosing bone density if they are underweight. If he's not aware of this risk, then be a decent human being, and kindly provide him with some resources so he can learn about it. If you're not really concerned about female runner bone loss, but just think his rhetoric might give someone the feel-bads, then keep your big judgmental nose out of it.

Yes it is 2018. We're getting fatter by the minute. Obesity related diseases are the number 1 killer of Americans. Maybe this coach is trying to teach these dough boys and girls the harsh reality that you MUST develop some self control with food, or you will be overweight, miserable, and die sooner.
