It’s a perfect course for him. He’s going to have to run low 2:06 to win though.
Is it a fast course?
Here is an article from our friend Paul Gains with some quotes from Jake. His #1 priority is winning but clearly he wants to run fast. He wasn't pleased with his 2:08:26 debut.
“Honestly, I wasn’t pleased with it,” Robertson reveals. “I believed I was in about 2:05 shape. I didn’t even know I had broken the New Zealand record because that didn’t even feature in my thought process. I was thinking about the course record (Wilson Kipsang’s 2:06:13) and that didn’t happen, and I didn’t win the race. I kind of had many emotions and I decided to enjoy that I had finished on the podium and then started thinking about the next one."
That Gains article is very interesting. Robertson reveals that he's unlikely to live in Kenya later in life and that he rarely runs with his brother.
Paul Gains wrote:
"As for living here (in Kenya) long-term, probably not. If we have kids in the future I would like for my kids to have full opportunity to anything they want to do. It’s not available here. We will have to put the kids first....”
He sometimes trains with a group but prefers to run alone on his easy days. He doesn’t train with his brother.
“No, I am self-coached and Zane doesn’t want to be coached by me,” Jake says. “He’s just coming back from his problems so, no, we haven’t trained a lot together recently.”
damn i thought for sure he was going to announce chicago but he said "they didn't want me" so i guess i'll have to keep waiting for the rest of the elite field to be announced for chicago
Course record is from last year which is 2:06:52 by some Kenyan named Philemon Rono.

He was asking a for an appliance fee they Chicago didn't feel justified.
He is a bit full of himself.
Not so sure Toronto was the best pick, how many people could tell you who has won the Toronto marathon. It gives him great shot at winning yes, he could though get pulled along to a 2:05 in a deeper more elite field and maybe pull off on upset at a major.

Is he a dishwasher salesman?
Toronto is IAAF gold, does have good pacers and not bad amount of prize money that he has a decent shot at. Chicago he'd probably be hidden in the pack and out of the money.

Not that fast. 2nd half can be difficult. Rolling sections @ 25km and 30km. at least 3 180 degree turns.
Can be hot/humid. 20 degrees and muggy
As an IAAF Gold race, top 10 finishers get to run in World Champs (if their national federation picks them). So a good chance for some 2:18-25 men and 2:40-50 women to qualify.

He asked for one too many toaster ovens. At least, that's what I heard.

I told Carey that I wanted to win Chicago so don't invite Jake.
Gaylen would Ruppp him apart. No contest.
Toronto is perfect for Robinson. His front running performance in the Beach to Beacon shows he's in shape and doesn't need much company to run fast. Plus, Robinson is shrewd enough to know that he'll run a better time in a race in which he'll be in contention for the win rather than aiming for the same time in the second pack of a 2:03 race.
Was hoping he'd do Chicago and match-up with Galen and Mo. Maybe Chicago was strapped for cash after paying the folks they've announced so far. Jake could likely pull a similar appearance fee to a lot of domestic stars because he's a fast white dude and people know his story or could care about it. Toronto might have had a faster winning time last year but the elite field was still much stronger in Chicago on paper. Rupp beat some better runners to win in 2:09 vs the 2:06-high in Toronto. Surprised with the choice given that Berlin, Chicago, NYC, and Amsterdam are all stronger races, IMO.
He will be the main attraction in Toronto and should be in a good race to go for the win & 2:06.
He must've been asking for way to much if Chicago didn't want him. He beat a really tough field in Houston last January with a solid time (60 flat over Guye Adola). He crushed Stephen Sambu in B2B who ran Chicago last year. Plus he's a Nike athlete. So that makes me think he just was wanting way too much $$$.

Can't be "too much" if, presumably, he got it from Toronto. Just a thought.
All of this talk of Toronto reminds me that Jerome Drayton still holds the men's Canadian record at 2:10:09. That record is over 42 years old. Drayton won Fukuoka three times.

I would be full of myself too if I recently devastated a world class field in Houston to win in 60:01 and blasted the Beach to Beacon field by nearly a minute.....
