Gordon T - Congratulations on the 2nd Place OA. Your weather conditions were the same as my race -- mid-70s temp, high 60s dew point, and I know it slowed my pace (as the Florida guys roll their eyes). Also, I had the same sort of competition situation -- really hard to push into the hurt zone with no one close enough to chase, and no pressure from behind. Anyway, I think you're clearly in sub-18 condition, and you'll get it after the marathon. My masters 5K PR came 7 weeks after my masters marathon PR.
Tall dark roast -- I probably asked this before, but forget ... any other racing planned before that November 5K? I assume you're looking for sub-17? Or faster? What kinds of workouts/training are you planning? And, finally, on the Leader Board my 83% score has expired; I need to fall a few spots to 81.50% 5K...19:17. Thanks!
Coach Jeff -- I have no doubt you'll reach your autumn racing goals. Long-term, are you thinking a marathon next year? Sub-3, right?
Sub-6 -- Hope that tendon has settled down. Still impressive you total 70 miles on just a five-day week.
RunGuy Midwest -- Wow, congrats on the OA win, the new PR and reaching your 10K goal. Given the weather, and the pretty much solo effort, I think the Daniels equivalents are, at minimum, a fair assessment of your current fitness. That surely puts you close to your 3-hour goal.
Smoove -- I agree that in this case you should revisit that last long-run workout.
angryjohnny -- That was a heckuva week in the summer heat. 90 miles! What's your highest-ever mileage for a week? The 2:40 barrier certainly looks ready to fall, and in a big way. I just noticed London on your calendar -- are you actually registered, or hope to be? I was reading recently how difficult it is for non-Brits to get in ...
RRR -- I hope you are holistically 100% soon. I selfishly am looking forward to seeing some great race reports from you. What sort of pacing/recovery for the 5 x 1000 with your friend? It's been a year since I have run that workout, and it might be next on my schedule ...
pewow -- I will echo the appreciation folks have for your "overall fitness" approach. As soon as I was able to run consistently this year, I pretty much abandoned every other pursuit, but I'm rethinking that approach, even if it means reducing my already low mileage. Last year my knee injuries forced me to bike (rather than run) many of my recovery days, and I think that actually helped me run my workouts faster, and more importantly, run my races faster. The weather was cooler, though, so hard to compare.
Bdubs -- Solid mileage and a good workout, I am assuming.
FitzyXC -- Looks like a nice maintenance week.
outsiderunner -- Wow, you crushed another incredible week of training. Honestly, I feel somewhat silly posting RACE splits that are way slower than your DAILY training miles. You're not THAT much younger than me! Enjoy your vacation, friend.
jewbacca -- Yes, a very fine week. I wanna have a long run like your 16 on Saturday. Nice!
Still Improving -- Your mileage build looks good. Your long run was the fastest pacing of the week, which I think makes good sense. I share your goal of shifting to morning runs; I was successful a couple times last week, and it sure was nice to have the cooler temps, and not worry about trying to schedule time later in the day. Also, how many guys here are looking at sub-3 marathons this year or next? I think Gordon T, Coach Jeff, RunGuy Midwest, you ... maybe me next year if one believes in miracles ...
Bird502 -- Always fascinating and inspiring to read an elite's training log! Hope that toe hasn't been an issue this week.
krishna -- Bummer about the asthma issues during your race. A friend of mine developed asthma later in life, and described to me that it was like trying to breath through a straw while running -- he just never could get enough oxygen to maintain pace.
HHH Runner -- Have fun testing out the new track spikes!
Pretzel Man -- Yes, it was good to finally meet you. I had a completely different mental image beforehand ... I think because at a race last year you must have left early, and someone else picked up your award. He was short and slightly built. Ha! Don't be too disappointed with your 15K. I don't think many folks could work in the sun, heat and humidity for 10 hours the day before and race as well as you.
RunnerSam -- Looking good for that November marathon. What's coming up next on your racing schedule?
Jeremy R -- Thanks for sharing your recovery-day paces. I am a big believer in making the easy days truly easy. Although I am wondering if I have taken that idea too far this year. Maybe 10:00-14:00 miles are just too slow. Last year when I was biking my recovery days, I was getting my heart rate up higher than 10-minute miles do, while not stressing my joints, connective tissues, etc.
Stone Cutter -- Thanks, once again, for your generous and encouraging comments. Hopefully I can put together -- and execute -- a plan to stay healthy while working toward 6:45/mi as MARATHON PACE 14 months from now. With my achilles hurting even as I sit here typing, and a current 15K pace of 6:43/mi, it's almost certainly a crazy fantasy. But a fun one!
