Welcome back!!
Back home. He attended Power Memorial High School not long after Lew Alcindor and became the first New Yorker to break 9 in the two mile, also running 3:43 1500m. He makes a very good hire. Maybe he could coach Mary Cain.
This could be a much stronger program with him there. They are right next to VCP, which is obviously a great place to train xc and track as well with the hills, the back country miles, and the flats. They're not far from Rockefeller Park, which has amazing carriage trails, and they're not far at all from the Armory meets, as well as Icahn Stadium and Columbia. He should be able to recruit people to live in New York. Is this why Centro, Jr. is headed back out west?

Wow the whole jr moving back east to work with daddy did not last long and same this with ar getting out of coach to guide jr ended fast. Bet American U cannot be to happy
American is thrilled that he's gone. He wasn't even showing up for workouts in his last few years there. When he left, they didn't even have 14 members per gender to field a full track team.
Don't expect him to do anything besides collect a paycheck at Manhattan. At best, they'll get a couple more recruits because of his name.
He must need the money.
First in DC and now in NYC . This guy is like a 28 MBA grad living in the big city with a 120 k a year job .
I read some of his book, but I found the writing and grammar too awful that it distracted the reader away from content that may or may not have been interesting.
How will he coach in both Washington and New York?

He owns a home in Arnold, Maryland with his wife. I wonder what's going on? I hope they are fine.
Manhattan will be a perfect fit- don't forget Centrowitz ran there before transferring to Oregon. Centrowitz is a fantastic coach. He may not be for everyone, but when an athlete chooses to run for him and listen to his suggestions they will do well. He may have been lackadaisical towards the end of his time at AU, but this is a fresh start, I'm excited to see what he does there.

LOL at fantastic coach. I know runners who have legitimate PTSD from running on American's team. He verbally abused his runners and ran them into the ground. His program was an absolute meat grinder, bone-grinder, self-esteem and self-worth grinder
Can't speak to his performances, but MC is such an annoying coach. Watched his workout wednesday with Matt Jr. the other day and his constant yelling is just unnecessary... I mean your son is a pro, olympic champion, I don't think he needs some middle aged dude to yell at him to go faster when he is hitting his splits perfectly.

You're REGISTERED name is "oldmancentro" and here you are defending Old Man Centro
Hmmm...
this seems like a marketing decision or maybe a transitional move for program, otherwise it would sort of be a demotion for the head coaching figures at hand, right?
Some middle-aged dude like his father and a former American record holder?
You do know that Centro was coached to the first American Olympic Gold in the 1500m since 1912 by this "middle-aged dude," together with Salazar, right? And you know that all those sessions with his father this past year set Centro up to recover from injury, win nationals, run 3:31, and win in London, right?

Matt was an Olympic champ, he was capable of doing all of those things... not sure how much the "specificity" of doing those workouts made a difference. he just needed to get healthy and on track
+1
It's like it was written by an illiterate.
A friend ran for the old man for a while. Said he made everyone upset or cry by verbally abusing them. Got to be where they dreaded going to practice. Didn't the AD vet this guy before hiring him?
Nice hire MC. Hope the runners' parents can afford counselling.

Agreed. I've seen him in action unfortunately and attest to the verbal onslaughts and not even knowing his athletes names when he showed up, if at all, and sober..
Can someone tell me what a Jasper is?
Sounds slightly racist.
Good to see a coach with great experience giving back at the lower level.
Will make a GREAT impact on the lives of young people!
Any stories of Centro Senior’s antics while coaching at American?
