My son is one of those tall skinny HS freshman kids who will be too big for and serious distance running by the time he is 17- 18. He is going to grow out the sport by being too tall and too big and strong, but with not enough 400M-800M upside due to lack of speed. He will be around 6'5 180-190, by senior year even if he stays at a low BMI. He is destined to be a hobby jogger before he even starts , just from maturing out of a distance body and the distances keep getting longer.
Should I let him dream that he can be great? Encourage him to bust his butt in pursuit of an imminent fade out even if he has a few good years? He didn't do enough other sports as a youth to go for other teams. He could swim, or do water polo but he doesn't want to. Should I tell him to run and enjoy, which I think he will, but that he is going to be too big and slow in the future for anything more than maybe Junior College middle distance?
