For the junior high school kids out there, a 2:10 Marathon was a big deal (even for an Ethiopian) in the early 1980s. I wonder what the Ethiopian record was back then.

That might have been the Ethiopian record. Based on ARRS, it seems Balcha was the top ETH marathoner for 5+ years. Just a couple minutes off the world record.
Of course, Abebe Bikila had set a world record of 2:12 at the Tokyo Olympics - in 1964.
