I have been running for 21 years. I ran in high school, college, and now as a has-been. I am currently 35 years old. I run 7 days per week and feel as if even though I run slowly twice per week (and only 45 min) I am not doing myself any favors in aiming to run daily. This isn't a "I am burned out" thread. It is a "I do not think i can recover running everyday" thread.
I have had periods in my 21 years where I quit running for a few weeks or took a break from competition for a year or so, but the fire still burns deep today. However, I think the tide is beginning to turn - not in my fitness goals, but how I would like to go about achieving them.
My Type-A, goal-setting, aspiration seeking qualities say to keep going with what I have always done. Common sense is telling me that the pool is calling (pool running) 30 min, 2-3 days per week, with 4-5 days of running.
Instead of just the running/pool duo idea, I have instead considered pick-up basketball 1-2 times per week, a day or two of strength training in the weight room. I only really need one session, but would consider doubling up if the pool, gym and court were in the same place (like a YMCA, for convenience).
I believe I need the endurance/stamina that running can provide. The relief that pool running can provide. The quickness/agility that basketball can provide, and perhaps some strength thrown into the mix (since I am aging).
I also need some motivation to convince me that this can work. I don't care about the marathon. I mostly race 400m - 10k, with a rare 10-miler or half-marathon every now and again.
Any takers?
