the next few weeks will see a number of 1 mile races so I thought it worth spreading a little love for those who put on these races and those who will be participating. good luck to everyone who takes part.
tonight, 19 July 2018, the Morton Mile will be taking place in Morton Stadium, Dublin, Ireland. the Morton Mile celebrates the memory of legendary Irish meet promoter Billy Morton and the race has been run there ever since his untimely death in 1969. past winners include such icons of miling as Kip Keino, John Walker, Steve Scott and Steve Ovett. the meet record is currently held by Will Leer at 3:51.82 which he set in winning the 2014 edition.
20 July 2018 - GNC Live Well Liberty Mile is a street mile in Pittsburgh, PA. held annually since 2012 the meet record is 3:59.0 by Jordan McNamara (2015).
21 July 2018 - Colorado Coyotes One Mile Race another street mile, this time in Littleton, CO, this will be the first running of this event they have decided to add to an existing festival of street racing. there will be waves for ages from 8 years and up and there is an elevation gain of 20ft over the course, ending at an elevation of 5,607ft.
21 July 2018 - DC Road Runners 1 Mile Championship this is a track mile at Dunbar High School track, Washington, DC. the event has taken place every year since 1999 when it was won by Paul Ryan in 4:55. the meet record is currently 4:05.0 by Jack Bolas (2015), and he is also the defending champion having done a 3-peat in 2015-2017.
3 August 2018 - Sir Walter Miler the 5th edition of this quality track mile takes place at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC. the meet record is currently held by Lets Runner Kyle Merber who ran 3:54.57 in 2016.
18 August 2018 - Aetna Falmouth Mile this event has taken place on the track of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA every year since 1995. the meet record is currently 3:54.89 by Jordan McNamara (2011).
25 August 2018 - Ed Murphey Memphis Mile this is the 2nd running of this event held in memory of Tennessee All-American Ed Murphey on the track at Christian Brothers High School, Memphis,TN. the inaugural winner and meet record holder is Craig Engels who ran 3:58.35. there are additional prizes for anyone setting Memphis soil or Tennessee soil records. the Memphis soil record is Engel's mark from 2017, while the Tennessee soil record for an outdoor mile is 3:55.65 by Nate Brannen at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, TN 2014, and the absolute Tennesse record is is 3:53.79i by Sydney Maree at the Kodak Invitational in Johnson City, TN in Jan 1986.
all of these events include races for kids, ladies, vets and elites. have fun.
