Hey guys, let's keep this thread going because it's still in a single figure number of pages - not nearly long enough for a runner who hasn't won anything of consequence in years.

Her form looked horrible. Short, almost shuffling stride.
only in America do they care about child stars. They want to predict a future.
Even here on letsrun it has its share of "What do you think I can run" Posts.
Answer - Who gives a shpoop?
She's not jakob ingebrigtsen, who is already on the verge of world class. She's a person who ran fast as a kid and is trying to make it as an adult. She may never make it. Leave her alone. Its her journey.
You guys already gave up and headed to the media posts.
what are the chances in a few years we will be back with a similar thread about the current NY bright star

This is the guy coaching Cain -
http://www.johnhenwood.comAre you kidding me this is who team Cain put their faith in?
There is nothing here that shows he is at all qualified to be her coach and might explain why since the switch from Salazar her performances have dropped off great ly.
Weren't her performances in 2015 already dropping off whilst she was still with Salazar? She broke 4:10 just once that year.

Why do people use this rediculous (lr sp) statement when trying to make a point? It is almost NEVER correct.
You really don't think that young athlete stars in other countries are not elevated and watched with anticipation of what they may accomplish?

Agree that the Cain team is likely using this as both a gauge and a workout, and a means of rounding into shape. Eager to see where her fitness is at in a couple of months.
I wish I had the disposable income to travel to Ireland to run 3-4 laps, just to see what kind of shape I am in.
What were the leaders times at 800

FWIW, 10th at the World Championships is better than any senior world championship placing by Jakob to this point.

About 2:21. Sisson led the pack at 1000 in 2:56.

Why are you using the * symbols when typing her name?
And isn't she making a comeback?
There was awhile where the mods were deleting anything that mentioned her name
And why was that, why can't we discuss her?

Poor comparison.

How is it a poor comparison to show international championship results in arguing the notion that Cain wasn't once as much a world class runner as Jakob is currently?

Spelling is your friend even when you intentionally spell incorrectly.
Nah, no other countries cares about their kids as much as this one does.
You should run more and worry about kids less. If you think its a normal thing to ID a young kid and wait ten years to see if they accomplish something, then you probably need to be tested. Take on a sport.

Because not all world competitions are equal. Not all world records are equal. Not all events are equal. Women's sports have an even greater range of talent amongst the entrants.
I hope she is successful in her career. An athletic career is short, no matter how successful. She now has a long way to go to become relevant. I hope she can bridge the gap.
But, oh, she was 17 in 2013, so she is clearly an adult now. Flame away.
Hasn't the 5 intervening years of lack of progress satisfied your curiosity?

I made no comments on her ever getting back to the form she once had. I only pointed out that it is patently false to say that "She's not jakob ingebrigtsen, who is already on the verge of world class. " She was every bit as world class as Jakob is now. She just isn't anymore. Some 17 year olds flame out. I don't think Inge will, but he hasn't had any better a prep career than Cain did.
It will be interesting to see if she stays in Europe and runs any more races.
If she does there clearly will be much interest here on LRC.
She clearly wasn't prepared to run a fast 3k, either physically or mentally.
If she enters some slower races B sections of a 800 or 1500 then she could use the experience to see if she can race her way into better shape.
Sometimes getting back on the track soon after a bad performance is the only way to take the sting away.

I have seen some amazing performances the race after dropping out. The next one will be key for her to just run 100% effort and finish!
I feel like she'll be fine, it's tough to jump in a race like that after being away from the track for that long.

Because it isn't a Championship year the year Jakob is 17. I think most would agree he has done a bit better if you want to actually draw a comparison using relative performances.

800's won't work. They will just show up her lack of speed work. Mary was barely hanging on the first lap. This wasn't a case of being up there and fading.............she was never up there.
If healthy, she is 3 months away from respectability. Her form was that of someone who has only been jogging for 2 years.
Currently Mary has none of that wonderful driving arm & leg motion she exhibited in the past. Mary needs to latch onto a quartet of post college sub-sub elite males in the Tri-state area and train with them.
Also, cut the crap about weight. Elinor Purrier channels her weight into STRENGTH.
Like you, I wish Mary well. Be patient grasshopper.
